Canned salmon is it only just for sandwiches

We usually buy canned salmon - and I am sick and tired of just having it for sandwiches, I do not want to make sandwich loaves, and it gets pretty boring just having it with salads. I know I have to eat more fish, and buying a regular fish here is not cheap. So has anyone here have some more ideas for using canned salmon besides salmon sandwiches?

Hi Suspenseful,
want to try something really different? Check this:
Boil a couple of eggs till hard boiled.
Cut up some onions and yeah some tomatoes too!
Drain Salmon, put in bowl with cut up eggs, onions, tomatoes.
Add Extra Virgin Olive oil to taste, mix and enjoy.
It's really good ~G~

That sounds good. I do not have tomatoes in my garden. Have to go all the way to
Superstore to get them. And I love the plum tomatoes.

I make salmon cakes. I buy the kind of Salmon that comes in a can, annd it is already cleaned. You just drain the water off of it. I mix it up with a little pepper and bread crumbs or crushed Corn Flakes and an egg white. Then I form it into a patty and coat it with crumbs. Because I watch my fat, I spray a pan with Pam, and put it in the oven for about 30 minutes, turning it once. You can fry it in a pan. I serve it with a baked potato and corn. My family loves them.

What temperature do you put the oven at when you cook it? I use 350 degrees for most everything but I was wondering whether it should be a little lower.

I made salmon cakes, and when I was young, mom would put white sauce on them. I preferred ketchup or HP sauce on mine.

Yum, I love all the suggestions about salmon cakes/patties, I have never tried them that way. I am like you having it on sandwiches or with a salad plate. I am not too fond of tuna but I could eat salmon, canned or otherwise, every week. I only eat the red salmon though as I do not like the pink.
I do like salmon on a bed of rice with vegetables. Get a bed of rice, add your favorite cooked vegetables cut up or stir fry some, then add some crumbled canned salmon. Top with you favorite cream sauce.

We get the pink salmon but I do like the red one better, but it is more expensive.
And I do love sardines and tuna, but my husband does not and I am getting sick and tired of having salmon sandwiches and salmon with salad all the time.

It's great with pasta. If you cook your pasta and stir fry a few red and green peppers then mix in the salmon in a fire-proof dish, season and add a slightly cheesy sauce, grate a little chees on the top and bake it in the oven until the cheese browns, it's great. Do try it!
Brightest Blessings.

That sounds like it might be good. Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose it is at a 350 degree oven or a little lower would be best.

I do love salmon cakes. I want as many recipes for canned salmon as possible since my husband does not want to pick out canned tuna when I ask him too.

I only use canned salmon for salmon fish cakes. they are very nutritious and tasty. And they make a very good change from just using it for sandwiches.

We cannot afford getting the fresh salmon so we have to use canned salmon. I wish we could buy some tuna but my husband does not want to. I used to eat quite a lot of tuna when I was young, but not any more. I will have to find some good salmon fish cake recipes.

hi suspenseful I love to make salmon patties with an egg in it, and dry bread crumbs, and just brown the patties on each side nicely and they are so good. then there is usually a recipe on the cans of salmon for salmon loaf which is really delicious. I like canned salmon myself. Canned tuna is less expensive too, and canned sardines these are all good for diabetics. I also like to make salmon salad with hiddenvalley ranch dressing and green leaf lettuce and a bit of tomato, really good.

I have tried to get my husband to buy canned tuna, but he does not want to pick them up. We do the shopping together. I guess I will have to go out myself and get some. I do love sardines and used to eat them all the time. That salad sounds very good. It is something like I make, only I use Romaine lettuce and spinach leaves and use the Kraft Olive Oil dressings.

I never made a dip, but I have had some salmon patties. I take all the bones out of the salmon because my mom used to fillet the salmon herself and she left some of the small bones inside, and I could not stand it.

I make salmon burgers, salmon loaf and salmon meatballs. I haven't tried doing salmon tacos yet, but they sound good.
As to other inexpensive fish, fresh tilapia tends to be reasonably priced and easy to prepare. That may be another good option.

Maybe I will try salmon tacos. I have had tiapia at a restaurant, but I figured the restaurant thought that when you need to lose weight, you do not add herbs and spices and that was the most bland dish I ever had.

I'm not really that original with salmon, but i do eat quite a bit of canned fish/meat for the cheap factor (and it's good protein).
Sometimes i'll mix it in with kraft dinner, i just make the kraft dinner, then toss in the can and stir it up until it's all mixed in.
Sometimes i'll just eat it out of the can. Not very creative, maybe add in some miracle whip and a side (veggies, beans) and you have a quick and easy meal.
I've also mixed it with rice, and one time used it as topping on a hot dog...which was different, but somewhat-tasty (no worse than saukraut or stuff like that).

We are rather cheap ourselves, I have had it on salads, but never with beans or with kraft dinner. I do not like kraft dinner that much, but could try it with macaroni.

I have not tried it with ketchup, most of the time it was with Miracle whip or mayonnaise with dill and cayenne pepper, but that sounds so much better. I will try it the next time.

I prefer canned salmon over salmon steaks. This is how I like it.
I chop up some onions and thinly slice a small tomotoe. Then I cook them a few minutes until they get soft. Then I add the canned salmon to the mix and cook it for a few minutes. Add a little salt and black pepper, then place it over a bed of white rice.
I usually compliment it with boiled potatoes. You can add other spices like chopped garlic or garlic powder.
It really taste good. I think you will enjoy it. I learned this from my mother who was born in Jamaica and is a very good cook.

I made a salmon macarroni caserole for supper tonight. I make it about once a month. We really like it a lot. I use canned salmon. Superstore sells the tall tins for 3.49 so that's not too bad. I use a casserole, butter it good. Boil and drain the macarroni. Put a layer of cooked macarroni on the bottom. Mix finely chopped onion with the canned salmon. I never measure anything but I like a lot of onion so I use a whole onion. Cover the macarroni with the salmon and onion. Make a white sauce and pour some over this then sprinkle Parmassin cheese, then repeat a second layer. I put it in a 350 oven till done. Little more than an hour.

I mixed salmon with eggs and added some onions and some spinach, but I need a better non-stick pan. Cannot have mac and cheese as I might have diabetes. Do not know for sure as I am losing weight.

I made salmon patties for my client since she got a can of salmon in with her free food the last couple of months.
I think we'd've both prefered tuna....
What do you do with canned salmon to put it on sandwiches? I've never heard of that.
This is pretty much the recipe I used: http://southernfood.about.com/od/salmonrecipes/r/bl30415h.htm

I do like tuna, but when I was young, we mostly had canned sardines, and we would go out to the restaurants for Fish and Chips. That is when they made it with Cod, but I guess the batter would not be that good for me. What we do is mix the canned salmon with Miracle whip or mayonnaise, add some dill and some cayenne pepper and some spices to give it flavor. I love tuna, but most of the time, we get salmon. I do not like salmon steaks that much, but I love smoke haddock and halibut, but you have to wash it a lot to get out most of the salkt.

One of my favorites is creamed salmon on toast. You just make a basic thick white sauce and add a can of salmon and season to taste. I just use salt & pepper. Serve it over toast. I also prefer to use boneless salmon, it is more expensive but I can never get all the bones out of regular salmon.
I also like to put canned salmon in salads. Usually with a spinach base.

Salmon patties are really good, or as my daughter calls them, crabby patties. You take one can of salmon, debone it well, add and egg, a little flower, and some chopped onion, mix it all up, and make patties out of it, and then fry them up in some olive oil, or you could bake them!! Yummy, and super good with french fries and cole slaw!!
