Hi Friend!
Okay here is the answer as grandmother recites to all of us every year on Diwali..
Sita, the wife of King Ram of Ayodhya was kidnapped by King Ravana of Lanka because Laksman, brother of Ram had insulted the sister of King Ravana who had tried to force Laksman into marrying her. After this thers is a war between Ram and Ravan and at the end Ram wins and that is what we celebrated few days before as
Dussera which means the win of truth and the defeat of the bad!Its a long festival cause the Diwali is the celebration which was first celebrated to welcome the victorious Ram and his wife in their kingdom Ayodhya.Since that night there weren't any moon and it was dark the people of the kingdom had lighted numerous deeps(oil candles) to welcome Ram and Sita.
Hence we light up our houses every Diwali to celebrate victory of the good over bad..Its actually a continuation of Dussera which is the festival of victory after long battle on the tenth day(hence Dussera=10)..all the nine days we do Puja and pray for the victory..
Diwali is also celebrated to welcome the goddess of wealth to our house as Sita was regarded as the incarnation of the Goddess..
Hope my answer was satisfying enough!
And its my birthday on Diwali..
Happy Diwali to you and all your family and may it bring all the colours and light into your life!

Hi there! I'm a Filipino but I lived in India for a year. I'm not really sure what is the true meaning of the Diwali! But from what I understand is celebrating Diwali is like celebrating Christmas. I hope that you will have an Indian person to respond here and explain the meaning of Diwali. Thanks!
