Today morning news-paper had this news "Chinese chocolates have melamine: FDA" Man, how do we distinguish between genuine chocolates and chinese made (if they are illegally using brand names like cadbury etc.) Any ideas on how we can prevent ourselves becoming victims of such adulterated food.

actually CNN flashes news regarding dairy products positive with melamine. also it does not guarantee that a non-chinese chocolate brand is already free of melamine until tested.

It is very difficult to trace if the chocolate is using an illegal way to smuggle chocolates by using a recognized brand into our country. All we have to do is put a trust into the people in charge such as the immigration people. They are the ones who are responsible to determine which are the legal food and which are not. Other than that I wouldn't know if a chocolate is contaminated with melamine if it is disguising behind a recognized brand name. Or the best way now is to avoid any type of food which you feel will have a chance of having melamine in it.

But I guess I would not always be buying chocolates from the one whom I know everytime. What in rest of the case. Also the shop kepper may also be ignorant of the issue.

Yeah, a number of milk products such as chocolates that came from China are contaminated with Melamine. Our health departments should be able to test these products for Melamine and publicly announce which should be avoided. Just to be sure, if you'll be buying milk products but it from a reputable mall or store (pick the top malls or groceries in your country or area ). There is still a possibility that some products may have melamine but the chances are slim compared to smaller stores and convenience stores. For example, buy your Cadbury or Hershey's chocolates from huge malls instead of a small convenience store on your street. There is a higher chance that the malls have better standards compared to the latter. The best bet is to avoid milk products altogether though but for me, I just can't keep away from chocolates.

That would be a better idea to buy chocolates from recognized shops or malls. Thanks
