It Came From Behind the Couch

In the true spirit of the upcoming holiday I thought I would write sort of a horror discussion.
In my house we have two identical couches instead of your traditional couch and love seat combination. Both of our couches are against walls and don't get moved but for twice a year. One to do spring cleaning, and once to make room for our Christmas tree.
Now my 2 year old has gotten into the habit of hiding things behind furniture. And by things I mean everything from shoes that aren't hers to half eaten bananas that I still haven't figured out how she manages to get them out of the kitchen. She herself will hide behind furniture when it comes time to change her diaper or to wipe her nose.
Just today I pulled her out from behind the recliner and with her came a half eaten Tootsie pop and a shoe I have been looking for since July! So I decided to do some investigating.
I found raisins, that started life under the couch as grapes. I found a sippy cup that made me want to notify the CDC because of what was growing in it. I found a game boy that my oldest son has been searching for since his birthday. Not to mention various candy wrappers, mismatched socks (finally THAT mystery is solved)a dinner plate, and a diaper from who knows when!
A downfall of using scented plugins is that you don't realize when you are sitting right on top of decaying matter.
While I muttered and squirmed and cursed silently under my breath my 2 year old just giggled at the "treasures" I pulled from under the couch and she tried to pilfer her favorites and hide them elsewhere but her attempts were thwarted, at least for the time being!
What horrors have you unearthed from under or behind your furniture?

Oh boy do I feel your pain! I have wood floors so everything, including the smallest particles of matter, gravitate to the area under the couch. It is like a black hole. I also do daycare so I have much more debris dropped on my floor (on a daily basis) than a normal person would. Although I vacuum every day to keep the floor tidy, I only flip the couches about once a week. I have found the biggest dustbunnies/furballs you have ever seen back there. They are so big we should have called Steven Spielburg. Barbie stuff, apple cores, books, leggos, unbelieveable amounts of markers and crayons (and I know exactly how those get there. I come into the living room and the little criminals stash the evidence before I find out they are away from the table with a marker. lol) What really kills me is that I find a huge pile every time! Can you imagine how much stuff would be living in the bottom of my carpeting if I did not have wood floors? Gross!

Fortunately, I don't have furniture where things can be hidden. And since the furniture is a little higher, it gets cleaned out everyday. But I do have an entertainment unit which is more like a 'Lost and Found' area. Though I can see and know what's under it, it's too difficult to move it and get to whatever is hiding there...so I do it just once or twice a year.
But your discussion brings back old memories of when I was a kid. My sister was always hiding things under the couch and 'forgetting' about it.
She also had a spot where she would pee!!!!!! We had floor to floor carpeting then and we couldn't figure out where the stink came from till we caught her in the act once!!

That is so funny! thanks for the laugh.
We just bought new furniture, so when moving our old couches out, I found treasures that were similiar to yours. There were tons of little bouncy balls there too!

It can be surprising what you find. I found a pencil, some crayons. There was a petrified starburst candy from around my daughters 5th birthday. That was 6 months ago. Also looks like the funnies from Sundays paper last week.

thank you so much for sharing this. I really needed a good laugh. I don't have kids that will hide things, but I do have a cat. He will hide cat toys under the cedar chest in the living room. The spaces at the bottom of the chest are just big enough to turn the whole thing into a black hole for kitty toys, and whatever else he can shove under there. LOL

I don't even begin to mention what I have found under the couch and love seat LOL!! Between the dog, cats, kids, and my other half I go under the couch dressed in full riot gear. LOL!! But I feel your pain. I'm glad that the kids have now gotten old enough to help out with their rooms.. Unfortunately I have to sit in the hallway with a good book and supervise and sometimes yell a lot. LOL!!!
