My 3 year old Chihuahua, Matilda is covered in hives. It happened last night and again tonight. I haven't fed her anything different than normal so I don't think she's allergic to something she ate. Last night, we thought maybe an ant bite could've caused it but now that she has them again tonight. We're not so sure. I'm worried about her. When she was a puppy she got the canine virus, Puppy Strangles and we almost lost her. I feel so bad for her. She looks so sad and just clings to me. Has anyone else had a Chihuahua get hives? What did you do? I don't have money to take her to the vet at the moment because my husband lost his job and we're struggling. I sure hope it goes away. I hate seeing her like this.

although I have never had a chihuahua I do own two pit bulls and last year while I was on vacation I received a call that my girl had hives all over her body- in a panic I called my vet and he said to give her benedryl. Believe it or not it cannot harm or hurt your pet- There are but two side effects- much like to humans- either your pet will get over energized for a while or she may sleep more than usual.

That's what I gave her. I wasn't sure how much to give so I took a human 25mg pill and broke it in half. The 25 mg is a low dose of the human benedryl so hopefully half was okay. She's asleep on my lap as we speak. The hives are still there but not as bad as they were so hopefully they'll go away. I just can't figure out what caused them two nights in a row. She was fine all day long today but she got them again tonight. We're not doing anything different or using anything around her that is different, so it's a mystery! Thanks for your advice though. I feel better knowing you gave benedryl too!

I have a chihuahua that is 7 years old and has periodically broken out with hives now and then. Mostly, I have noticed it when she comes in from outdoors and fertalizer and any other product has been used by the gardeners. I also noticed it with change of her food ( which I only stick to one brand now for she has a sensitive stomach and with not hold down anything different than her reg food). I also noticed that she may break out to smelling certain Plants, or even cold weather ! I give her a half a benadryl ( NEVER any more ! ) and she will be fine in about an hour, I also usually give her a bath and scrub her skin good in case of any skin irritants) which also seems to help. My dog also believe it or not, gets asthma attacks, mostly from excitement when I come home, or certain smells will trigger this. She has a 'barrel chest' similar to COPDS patients from her attacks over the years, due to stiffening of the lungs? She has been to many vets regarding this and I have been told there is nothing else I can do but watch her, make sure there aren't any strong perfumes, etc around her. She is not a nervous dog, at all like most chihuahuas, quite calm as a matter of fact.
