Is the animal shelter a good place to get a new puppy?

My partner is getting me a puppy for Christmas to replace my little girl who died last Christmas. I am not sure what to do. I love German Shepherds but I know I am not well enough to look after such an energetic dog and my partner has talked about the animal shelter. I have a hard time trying to think of a breed that might suit all of us and I cannot afford a pedigree dog anyway so it would have to be a mixed breed. I do like the idea of getting a dog who needs a home and if I can find one who can get on with our boy it would be perfect. What do you think? Is the animal shelter a good place to find a new puppy?

I think getting a pet is a great idea. When my dog Petey passed away 2 years ago, our cat Morgana was a great comfort to me. While no one, human or pet, can replace your daughter, they do offer wonderful comfort and compassion. I'd suggest looking at one that isn't wildly energetic but is young enough that you won't have to worry about it passing away any time soon. The idea of getting it from the animal shelter is great too...you get a loving puppy and the puppy gets a new lease on life and a good home...everyone wins. Good luck with it and my condolences on the loss of your little girl. ~~IN SEARCH OF PEACE WITHIN~~ **AGAINST THE STORMS, I WILL STAND STRONG**

I am sorry the words "my little girl" made me think it was a child that you lost. I also never had children and my furbabies are my children. ~~MY OWN PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF**

I think the animal shelter is a wonderful place to find a new puppy or any other pet! And unless it is a "no kill" shelter, adopting a pet from there might even save its life! A friend of mine got his dog from the animal shelter and he has been very happy with him. He has had the dog for many years now. This dog is the sweetest, gentlist, most good natured dog.

I do hope its a no kill center. I would want to take them all home if I thought that they were in danger. I am not sure about this. Our shelter is the RSPCA. It also acts as the local pound for the council.

YES!! The local animal shelter is an excellent place to get a dog. It's always better to save a life than to buy from a breeder!! And never EVER buy your puppy from a pet store, most of those come from puppy mills & backyard breeders who don't care about the dog's well being but are only in it for the money!!

I have only ever bought from a shop once. It was not a pet shop but a place that just sold dogs and they were all in good health. My little maltese/shihtzu came from there and she had 12 fun years with me. This time I want to rescue a dog. I have had pedigrees as well and the breeder was unscrupulous, the dog I got from here was sick all her life. I think mixed breeds are much healthier. I really hope to find a nice dog that makes everyone happy, my partner, my boy dog and me.

I like your idea of homing an unwanted puppy. It depends what you are looking for. When it comes to a mixed breed puppy it is difficult to predict how large or big it is going to be. You might have difficult to determine what temparament he is. To be honest I always go for a breed dog even if it costs money. © ronaldinu 2008

I have had breed dogs before and they were sick all their lives, it was a bad breeder who line bred. I find cross breeds much healthier but it does vary depending on the breed. I will go to the shelter and check out the dogs. I am sure I will find one to love. I think you can tell a dogs temperament when you meet them. As to size, well the paws give you are good idea as paws are pretty close to full grown when young. So big paws, big dog.

I have gotten 2 dogs and a puppy for our local dog pound/shelter whichever and they have all been great dogs. I just love our lab we got almost 2 years ago from the shelter. He's a great dog but a little clingy. I always go straight to the shelter when I want a dog.

Sounds like a good recommendation. I do love the idea of being able to rescue a dog and give it a good home. I know I will want to take them all home knowing that they might not be kept alive.

I have some purebred Chihuahuas and I also have some mixed breed lab/boxers. I've owned both types in my life, the full blooded and the so called "mutts". Get a Mutt. They are wonderful and if you spend any amount of time with animal rescue groups, you'll never get a purebred again! So many beautiful dogs and puppies get put down because there are not enough homes. Get a mixed breed from the pound or even a purebred from the pound. They often have both. Just find one that grabs your heart and love it to pieces! Good Luck!

I am really keen to go now, I love the idea of rescuing a dog. I have started to check on their website to see what dogs they have and if I can find a dog that makes everyone happy. I really want my partner to take me there. I cannot drive at the moment as I have a saw left arm and it hurts too much to turn the wheel so I have to rely on him to take me everywhere.

Definitely! Check the animal shelters and rescues. Look around on Petfinder.com to see what's near you. Personally, I prefer mixed breed pets because they don't have the health problems of purebreds. Plus, they're more unique looking and people will often ask you, "what is that?"

Good point. I agree that mixed breeds are much healthier and I would not get a purebred again unless it was a very good breeder but I cannot afford that anyway.

Animal shelters are great places to find good pets. One of my best ever dogs came from a shelter. She lived a long 16 years and was the best companion. She was a mutt, and they often make wonderful companions. If you have health problems (I understand, I do too) then I would suggest finding a dog that is more laid back, doesn't need a huge amount of space or alot of walking. Talk to the shelter people and they can find a dog that best suits your needs.

Thanks for the advice, I will do that. My partner walks our dog at the moment but he says that I should not get a breed that is too energetic as I would not be able to exercise such a dog if I was on my own.

The animal shelter is a great place to adopt a dog. Not only are you saving it from certain demise, you are getting a dog that is in most cases spayed or nutered and that is up to date on its shots. I know around here, you can't adopt a dog from a shelter that hasn't been spayed or nutered. If they haven't yet done it for you, they require that you do and they will give you a coupon for a discounted rate. I think most importantly though, you are saving an animal from being put down. Shelters just don't have the space or money to keep the dogs there forever so it is inevitable that they must be put down if not adopted in a reasonable amount of time.

Yes. Our shelter only sells dogs that have been neutered and have had all their shots. They are very careful about that.

Yes it is. I got 2 out of 3 my dogs from a shelter when they were puppies. One is a blue tick hound the other one is a lab-pit mix. They are very friendly and easy to train. If i wouldnt of adopted the lab mix they would of put her to sleep because of her breed. So I saved her life and that feels really good. :) She is a very good dog. They all are:) And they love my kids. I highly recomend going to a shelter you could be saving a life. Good luck to you:)

Yes the idea of saving a life is a strong motivating factor. My partner has told me that our shelter is a place that kills dogs if they do not find a home so I am hoping we can find a dog that gets on with our male dog. That is why I am thinking of a female dog as I am not sure he would be happy with a male and I know he loved my little female dog and still misses her.

Sorry about your loss last Christmas. Animal shelters are the best place to get a smaller or older dog from. I cannot have a dog as I am allergic to all of them unfortunately, but my family always use the animal shelters. They say a dog picks you, and you will just know when it looks or comes to you.

Yes it has been a sad year for me. Normally I would have got a new puppy straight away but because we still had one dog I did not need to and he has been so sick this year that we could not afford it earlier. Now I am ready. I think that would be wonderful if the dog picked me. I would pick them all.

I think that animal shelters are one of the best places to get a new puppy. Not only are basically saving the dog's life but sometimes you can et lucky and find a puppy that is already house broken and trained somewhat. All the dogs at animal shelters need home badly. The last dog that we got from the animal shleter was the best dog ever. She was party trained and mostly house broken and she was only around a year old so she was still a crazy puppy! I have heard that a lot of pet stores actually are not goof places to get a dog because the way they are treated. Also, many times purebred dogs have problems physically such as brain problems and problems with their bladder are common also.

Yes I only had a purebred dog once in my life but she was sick for the whole 7 years she lived. It has made me very cautious about breeders but I also cannot afford the prices they charge. I do like the thought of rescuing a dog and giving her a good home. I have been thinking puppy but some people have suggested rescuing an older dog and I am seriously thinking about that. I will see what dogs they have when I visit.

It's a great place...they really need good homes and they might be killed if you don't get them. I think it would be a great Christmas present for you and the lucky puppy.

it can be a good place. they will often want to do a home visit and assess your place etc before placing an animal. they will also be able to advise you what would be best for you.

I hope not as our home is a long way from the shelter. Anyway we will find out when we go into town. We only go in once a fortnight because it is so expensive now.

I think the animal shelter is a great place to get new pets from because these animals are usually going ot be put down if they aren't adopted. They are perfectly healthy, happy animals but if no one takes them they will be put to sleep. So, I think it's wonderful for someone to essentially save an animal from dying for no reason other than not having a loving home to go to.

I really like the idea of people adopting from animal shelters. There are so many dogs that need homes. There have been cases of purebred dogs at the shelters. You can go and interact with dogs that you might like to adopt before actually adopting them. I had one dog I got from a shelter when I was 13 years old, she was a border collie cross. She was such a sweet dog. I have 4 dogs now, two I got from a breeder (my aunt) they are papillons. The other two were abandoned dogs, one was left on the side of the road when he was 6 months old he is a husky/shepherd cross. The other was at a rental place we cleaned he is a red/blue heeler cross. I think that they really have a good heart especially if you "rescue" them. I hope this helps a bit.

I would love to adopt all the dogs at the shelter but I cannot afford to. I think the best bet is to just look for a medium sized female dog that can get on well with my boy.
