"During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by [Rashid] Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars. A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.) The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."" -- http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_10/015427.php *** So what's the big deal, you might ask? Well, nothing. Not in an of itself, at least. But here's the hypocrisy: both John McCain and his campaign (Sources: http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5i2cTbnZTDVHPcifBpEzmkfqOOtlg , http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1008/McCain_camp_demands_LA_Times_video.html?showall ) have accused Obama of something sinister in the fact that he simply went to a going-away party for the same person a while back, becuase conservatives are claiming that he has ties to Yasser Arafat (by the way, he doesn't: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/14/opinion/main3938453.shtml ). So, here we go again--IOKIYAR (It's Okay If You're A Republican). The conservatives see no problem with McCain funding the man, but Obama goes to a going-away party, and suddenly he has ties to Arafat and THIS IS A REALLY BIG DEAL BUT PLEASE FORGET ABOUT THAT FUNDING BY MCCAIN OKAY? The hypocrisy is mind-numbing.

Obama is running a clean campaign. McCain is mudslinging. I would think that McCain displays his weakness as a candidate because he cannot stand on the strength of his own platform and, instead, spends time trying to distort his opponent's positions.
