Soy Based Products - Bad or Good???

I hate soy based products. I think they taste aweful. I've heard, and you probably have to, all these claims are made that it's a wonderful product, so healthy and a great alternative. Maybe not friends! This is a clip from a Squidoo lens, it's today's lens of the day - "The manufacturers and distributors of Soya based products forgot to mention that medical studies now show that men who dine on a single serving of Soya every second day have dramatically reduced sperm counts compared to men who do not ingest Soya products.... They don't even whisper that a review in 2006 by the American Heart Association found that Soya Isoflavones do not reduce hot flashes in women with menopause, or that there is no evidence that Isoflavones help prevent cancers of the prostate, breast, or uterus. Nor do these same manufacturers and distributors mention that it is now advised that women with a history of breast cancer should be very careful when consuming Soya products. It is advised that those who take the anti-cancer drug tamoxifen, should completely eliminate Soya based products from their diet, as Soya may reduce the effectiveness of this drug...." Check it out here http://www.squidoo.com/dangers-detriments-of-soya AND more information for non believers can be found here too http://www.forgoodnesssake123.com/unglued.html?gclid=CJmIscmBzZYCFQE0xgodfhMtxA I'm glad I hate the taste of it and will read more labels to try and minimize my intake of it! How about you, do you believe it? Think soy is bad or good??

I can't eat soy based things because of a thyroid condition. If you have hypothyroidism then you should stay away from all things soy - it can mess with your levels. I think that many soy products are very high in sodium as well. Soy sauce certainly is. It's one of those products that is pretty bland and plain on it's own so it makes a good candidate for a base. All sorts of flavoring can be added to soy to make different "things". Most seasonings and flavorings tend to have a ton of salt.

It depends how you work with soy. Alot of people enjoy snacking on edamame (immature or young soy beans)...they tell me it's sweet and slightly nutty in taste. I ADORE soy sauce, which is definitely something you should use in moderation and is more of something of culinary value than something you can just slurp down. As it is very powerful in taste, and bitter. Tofu (which is basically flavorless) is made from soybeans. Not all soybeans are the same, and it all depends on how they're used, prepared. My Mom drinks soy milk (chocolate flavored) regularly to combat the effects of perimenopause. Plus, the reason why it does that to guys is because soy helps increase FEMALE hormones in the human body. Naturally, we all have varying balances of both male and female hormones doing their thing inside us. So obviously, you can draw on this to conclude that in men who eat soy regularly their female hormones are being more active. Usually not the point that they get more feminine traits (like being a bit less hairy or more slender), just in that...area. Lol. An alternative to WHAT, is the question you should be asking before deciding whether it's good or bad for your health specifically. All foods have an effect on the human body. Did you know that garlic regulates blood pressure and is known an immune system builder? Historians have recently found that among the survivors of plagues in the past, alot of them were families who regular consumed garlic and rarey mingled in large places filled with people. Soybeans are just as healthy as any other vegetable. Whether it's for someone specifically though, is only for them to determine.

I understand from this thread that you very much dislike it! I myself just love soy sauce and will be growing a small patch of soybeans to harvest edamame to sell next year. There's alot of health nuts out there, and while I'm not one of them I do like to know what foods are good for what should it ever be relevent in my or my family's life. There's a fine line between being a health nut and just being health concious I guess, huh?

hi redkathy my diabetes educator and my dieticaian both say soy is very good for diabetes to help lower blood glucose. I think that some soy based foods are better than others, however you are supposed to build on those with other things like veggies and a little lean meat. I know that soy cannot be used by people who take thyroid pills as it reduces the effectiveness of them but the same thing can be said for grapefruit and high blood pressure medications, if I eat grapefruit I have to wait several hours before I take my blood pressure meds as it reduces the effect of them also. yet grapefruit is really good for us and so is soy. but some people just do not like the taste. I think its an acquired thing, either you do or you dont. I love chocolate soy mnil and soy meat flavored crumbles and soy sauce but again others do not. I think that soy is very good for me and all that I have read says it helps diabetes so that is enough for me. I have no cancer problems and am not a guy so I will stick with my soy products.

It may effect your thyroid which in turn lowers your metabolism. It is not only bad for people with low thyroid, it may be one of the things that make your throid go bad. As I have said before I eat low carb and when I was very strict about it, I was eating 40-60 carbs a day. If you eat that way you blodod glucose will stay low, but you can not eat the carbs all at once, they have to be spread throughout the day. I have my bloodwork done every year ( my Grandma had diabetes) and I always have a low sugar count. And yes I know I am healthy right now, but you can cure Type 2 diabetes or keep it so low no meds are needed. I know this as a fact as a close friend's 33 year old son was diagnosed with diabetes. I sent her the diet and his need for insulin kept gettimg lower and lower and now he is off meds. Soy that has not been fermented is the kind to watch our for.And not all dieticians are right.

I've never used Soy based products to my knowledge. I rarely keep up on all the health information because it can be misleading, and sometimes I don't think it's always the truth. I think anything, including chocolate and fatty foods, are fine if taken in the right quantities. I follow what I was taught as a child, to follow the basic food groups. It worked then and it's still working for me now. Although.. if soy reduces sperm count, perhaps I should make my husband eat more of it, lmao!!

People always tend to go overboard, soy like anything else is just as good for you as any other grain, but like anything else if eat to much it's not good for you. Esspecially if you are a human male.

I do take soya milk. I have got used to it and I cannot complain about it. My wife is intolerant to cow's milk so we had to resort to soya. Soya is a great source of calcium and protein. However, yes, eating a lot can cause excess estrogen hormones in your body. One of the negative things in soya that it reduces sperm count in males. That is a natural contraceptive that can save me a lot of money :) © ronaldinu 2008

Soy - Touted as the healthy alternative to animal proteins.
Interesting. How reliable are these sources of information? This is the first time I am reading about the negative effects of Soya products. Soy based products will reduce sperm count? Does these products include sauces like dark soy and light soy sauce used commonly in chinese cuisines? Or toufu in all it delicious forms? Hmm... being fed with so many years of facts on how healthy Soy is, reading this is indeed something unexpected.

My dad can't take soy products because it's bad for his knees. I forgot what the condition is called. But I think soy's good for those who are on a diet because it contains less fat than cow milk does. I don't like the raw taste of soy. But I like it when its sweetened or when cooked with soy sauce. :)

I have never eaten anyting soy based that tastes good. I finally gave that notion up a good while ago. Sometimes I can tolerate things if I know the health benefits are great enough even if I don't particularly care for them. I mean, I can smother them in somethng or figure out some way of ingesting them. But soy...yuck...You can't even mask that taste! LOL
