My missus has just arrived home from work. No, she isn't a private eye, but she does work in Manchester Town Hall.
At this time, Guy 'I still love Madge' Ritchie (not a real Cockney) is filming his latest heap of rubbish - Sherlock Holmes! Apparently, Robert 'like Sherlock, I love opiates' Downey Jnr is playing the lead role, with support from Jude 'Don't do it Sadie' Law.
At a recent press conference, Guy gushed that it was going to be truer to the books than previous films (Basil Rathbone & Jeremy Brett are spinning in their coffins). This begs two big questions;1/ Why are they filming in Manchester (the Northern Quarter and Town Halls Sculpture Hall) when it is based in London?
2/ Rachel McAdams is cast as the love interest, for the greatest misogynist in literature. Sherlock's distaste and contempt of women is only rivalled by James Bond, though even James enjoys bedding them - Sherlock can hardly stand to be in the same room as a woman.
Apparently, Americans like a love interest, couldn't differentiate London from Bognor Regis and would not tolerate two men (Holmes and Watson) sharing rooms at 221b Baker Street! Bollocx my dear Watson.
After having been largely forgotten in the UK after their publication in the Strand magazine, it was an American audience who first ressurected Holmes' carrer, through the medium of radio in the 1920s and 1930s. This led to the films being made, and the resurgence of the stories popularity worldwide. Americans DO enjoy a love story, but don't depend upon it - many great films have not been remakes of 'Love Story' and have been enjoyed by Americans. Finally, two men sharing accomodation - what about Bert & Ernie, Chandler & Joey, Rudolph Giuliani & his two gay friends when his marriage ended!
Please boycott this movie, and show that a great storyline need not be bastardized.
I trust Downey can do a better English accent than Keanu Reeves - where is he now?
