How can I wash my sneakers without damaging them?

I am going out of town soon and I want to take my Adidas running shoes with me, but I would like for them to be clean, inside and out. Any advice on how to effectively wash them in the washing machine without damaging them? Also, what is the best way to dry them. I hear to dry them in the sun...about how long does that take?
