With the way the economy has hit us, and the fact that many of us are hurting this year and can't afford much for Christmas... would you consider joining a toy or clothing exchange in order to get gifts for your child for Christmas?
I've just started one on Facebook for people in my area. I thought it was a great way to get rid of old things my kids don't play with, but that are still in good condition. It might help someone who doesn't have a whole lot of money to go buying things for their own children. I've already offered up a lot of my children's outgrown clothes. At some point I'll have my kids go through their toys and any that are still in nice condition will be offered as well.
Do you think it's a good idea? Would you join one if there was one in your area?

This is a wonderful idea! I have been posting a ton of stuff on freecycle hoping that someone can use it for Christmas too. I did get a very nice, like new, dry erase board from freecycle for my daughter. I painted the woodwork and cleaned it up and will give it to her as a Christmas gift.

Yes, I am on Freecycle also! It is done by state and county, and people post offers and wanted on there. I have gotten some good things and also shared some good things . It is better to know someone can use the items you dont want anymore! Check out Freecyce in yahoo groups!

There's already an organization like this in place and yes! I belong to the one in my local area!
You can find yours at www.freecycle.org .
The whole premise of this site is to keep things in circulation and out of landfills. Got something you don't want? Give it to someone else! Need something? Instead of buying it, put out a request to see if someone is trying to get rid of theirs.
Happy Lotting! :-D

I think it is a wonderful idea. And why not? We thrift for clothes. We use coupons at the grocery store. Saving money this way is good too. The kids will just be happy to have a toy in good condition that they haven't had before. Yes I think I would join one.

I think that it is a cool idea, it is an idea that I would have welcomed most warmly when I was on my own with my first born as it was really hard back then. If I was still in that position or if I ever get in that position again then I would definately consider something like that, luckily this year at least I saved all year so I have enough to get what I want for them.

This is a superb idea, and if there were one in my area I would certainly join it.
There was a clothes exchange for kids where I used to live, and I used it regularly. I could take along the grown out of clothes and swap them for something that fitted. If there wasn't anything that suited on that occassion then they would 'credit' my name with an item so I could choose something at a later date.
I would be happy to use somewhere like this for gifts if I could find items that were of a high enough quality (the luck of the draw I guess!), but I would use an exchange like this all year round as I think it's a great way of recycling and saving a bit of money into the bargain.
Good on you for starting something in your area. Best of luck with it.

It's a great idea. I actually started a similar discussion a while back and most people said it was an ok idea but no one wanted to paticipate. I think if we lived in the same area we'd be doing a lot of exchanges with one another. Good luck. I hope it works out as well as it should.

Yes I would join. I think that a great way to get of toys and clothing that aren't being used anymore. I'd rather do that than give them to second hand store that way if your giving them away for free somebody doesn't have to pay something for them.
