CNN disgusts me

CNN's Hero Website - CNN's hero website which sings the praises of community activists and planet defenders but offers no mention of any U.S. soldier.

CNN is running a contest for Hero of the year. They are running a special next month on their network profiling these heroes. They ask visitors to their website to vote on their favorite hero. While most of the nominees seem worthy of recognition, I do see one glaring omission. Why is there not one member of the U.S. military listed as a nominee for hero of the year? With Congressional Medal of Honor winners out there and tons of unsung military heroes out there, they could not find one single soldier worthy of recognition. While I understand that CNN has a worldwide audience base, they are a U.S. company and I find this incredibly rotten even for CNN. While CNN and their ilk ignore the bravery and dedication to service of our military, I hope that the rest of America takes every chance possible to recognize their sacrifice.

CNN runs this "contest" for the every day ordinary American that goes above and beyond their day life to make life better for others. Every one realizes that the military members are heros every day. I'm sorry you think it's so rotten for people that aren't in the military to be awarded such a title of "hero" for trying to help their fellow citizen.

Sadly, I think the word 'hero' is greatly overused and can lead to cynicism in some quarters. For me, a 'hero' is when someone does something to help / save others at great personal risk to himself/herself when confronted with a dangerous situation. In that sense, one can well argue that all soldiers are heros as they put themselves in danger in iraq and afghanistan, though clearly some soldiers are more heroic than others, eg when one soldier noticed that a grenade was going to go off, he threw himself on the ground face-up and used his backpack to smother the grenade -somehow he did not die but he also saved his fellow soldiers by smothering the blast of the grenade. Now that is a hero allright, not these stupid popstars who are called 'hero' for some stupid reason!

We seem to think alike, somewhat. Most of what I've seen of these CNN Heroes was just people doing their jobs or something they volunteered for. Noble, yes. Hero, no.

Of course they are heroes, but I think you are missing the point. I went to the site and frankly didn't see anyone I'd call a hero. Maybe noble, but not hero. The only one I saw come close was the Scottish guy (forget his name) that pulled some people from a car. I don't see him among the votes though. Guess my idea of the hero being someone who deals with what is thrust upon him, isn't the same as others. Calling it like I see it.

How would you work that one out though? You would have to nominate the entire US military and then that would be rather hard to choose from. All of them would be the winner.

All members of the military deserve our respect but they are not all equal in the hero category. Some of them go above and beyond the sacrifice that others would consider. These are recognized by service awards including the medal of honor. If the stories of some of these individuals were properly told, people would be amazed at what a hero really is. With these individual stories available, I thought maybe CNN could of included one.

That would be a tough choice. How could they choose.
