All saints day or All souls day

Why do we visit the cemetery on November 1? November 1 is All saints day and november 2 is All souls day. which means celebrating and visiting of our loved ones who passed away should be on all souls day. I've noticed that on November 1 the cemetery is full pack but on Nov 2, the people are just few. aside from tradition, why do you think we celebrate on Nov 1 and not on Nov 2

Good question! I've never thought about that but then I also haven't celebrated All Saints' Day for a while now. Is November 2 also a holiday in the Philippines? If not, maybe that's why they celebrate it on the first? If it is, then I don't know the answer. I think we like to think of our loved ones who gone away to be as saintly as they are also looking over us.

November 2 is not a Philippine Holiday. but if that will be the reason, why not move the holiday instead . sometimes nov 2 is also declared as special holiday. it depends. this year it fell on sunday thats why it was not declared a holiday

I really don't know lolz, but traditionally we always going to the cemetery every November 1 for the morning mass and light a candle to my grandfather grave and offer him a prayer then we have a small foods to offer to him. On the November 2, we are all in the house, we cook foods, light a candle and offer some foods on the altar for his soul to visit us and other family souls who passed away. So maybe November 1 we visited the cemetry coz their souls are still there and november two it's the day that they joined us at home. lolz

hi rainmark. but people say that the soul do not stay in the cemetery, only physical bodies or say the bones are their. maybe you are right, celebrate at home because the souls are there

I have the same questions as yours . Maybe because people want to go there at Nov 1 because they doesn't want to wait for another day. Just maybe, but I would rather go at Nov 2 or Nov 3 because I don't want to join the crowd on Nov 1.

Well, i really don't know! But we usually visit the grave of our love ones' every 1st day of November.. We know that November 1 is all saints days and on November 2 is the all souls day.. I think it is already the tradition of people to visit the grave of their love one's on the 1st day of November..

beats me :-) my theory is this: we are supposed to go there november 1, evening, stay overnight until november 2 and stay there the whole day. but then, we become too tired to stay the whole day of november 2, because we've been there since november 1. so we go home. as years pass by, we forget the november 1 "evening" thing because we try to go earlier to avoid the crowd. LOL! i don't know really. see ya around!

No idea but my mom always remind me to go to church on All Saints Day (1st Nov) to pray for my patron saint. Further, It is a "mandatory" day to go to church, as I was repeatedly informed and advised by my mother. Regardless of whether it's mandatory or not, I still go to church on Nov 1st coz it's a Saturday and I always go to sunset mass on every saturday. Nov 2nd is All Souls Day, a day where we visit the graves of our love ones. I'll be visiting my 2nd sister's grave, together with my wife and parents this sunday.

I've been wondering about the same thing too. It could be probably because people would want to seek intervention from saints for their prayers for their deceased loved ones (",).
