Hi.
I know a bit about this.
The wireless communication started when Marconi displayed that he can send and receive radio signals from boats sailing across the English channel and soon after we started using mobile devices for communication. Here mobile stands for devices which can be used on a move. These devices used analog signals and where said to be of first generation wireless communication devices.
After that the second generation of wireless communication started in which signals where digitized and better bandwidth allocation and efficiency resulted in better service and huge increase in user base. Since 2000 2g is available everywhere in the whole world. The 2g devices where divided in two categories on the basis of technology they used. GPRS and CDMA.
After this came the 2.5g. I don't know much about it but that it is used everywhere now a days. Actually it was developed to enable the 2g devices to have data transfer capabilities along with the voice carrying capability.
Next stage in this evolution is the 3g. It would be implemented in two ways. WCDMA for the upgrade of 2g CDMA and another one for 2g GPRS(I can't recall the name of it for now). It will surely increase the data rate on wireless devices.
I am from India and the 3g technologies are in testing stage here. It is available in a few metro cities and will be available for everyone everywhere.

3G refers to the third generation of developments in wireless technology, especialy, mobile communications. The third generation, as it name suggests, follows the first generation (1G) and second generation (2G).
The 2G phrase began in the 1990s and much of its technology is still in use. The 2G cell phones features digital voice encoding. Exmple include CDMA and GSM. Since inception, 2G technology has steadily improved, with increased bandwith, packet routing, and the introduction of multimedia
