My first Halloween experiance, can anyone say more?

I was all alone at home today. There was a knock in the door. Anticipating none I opened the door. To my surprise there was a group of kids dressed in attractive costume. They rendered me a tub of chocolates.
I asked if it were the kid's b'day and took one candy from the tub. The kid was blinking along with me. Then the elderly lady said I had to treat the kid. So I put the candy back in the tub.
Could anyone say what are the halloween formalities?

On Halloween children go around from door to door and say "trick or treat", and you give them a piece or a few pieces of candy and then they say Happy Halloween and Thank You, and then you shut the door.
