Do you think self promoting in Social bookmarking site is ethical?

I have came across people showing vast resentment towards people who self promote their articles, sites or blogs. However, in my personal and most humble opinion, I think it is not wrong to do so as long as the material shared are not essentially infringing and abusive in nature. But people still think otherwise. This is especially in the 'Digg' community, a little bit of self promoting will be complained by other users.
What is your thought and take on this?

It is ok to promote your self as long as you do it in a right way. For example, if you'll comment on other member's blog in order to get some back links, you should post quality contents that are relevant to that blog. If you'll promote using forums, you can use your signatures and profiles. That's the right way to promote your self, as long as you'll follow the rules, there will be no problems.

I agree with you that it is ok to promote own article as long it is done in the right way. But I guess it is not right to do it forum unless it is placed in signature. Anyway, forums or discussion site like MyLot does prohibit self promoting which I guess is right. As far as social bookmarking site is concern, some does allow and some really prohibit it. Somewhat subjective from what I see. Thanks for the great response.
Cheers.
