Is Google Meant To Confuse Us When Searching A Topic?

Hello Mylottians, i was writing an article which was based on oasis in a sahara desert. I was quick to log on to the net and the first search engine that come to my mind was Google search engine. I typed a search string based on the project and google provided me with a myriad of links that i had difficulty with selecting the best that would suit my article... i would like to know the best ways one can eliminate unrelevant links that spews forth in a google search result and also maximize time by selecting the best search results. I would appreciate your responses so much. Thanks for your anticipated co-operation.
