I am this year. In a local election for county Sheriff and Tax collector the incumbent is facing opposition from a write in candidate. Last election was chaotic for Sheriff, the incumbent a Democrat lost in the primary, then Democrat lost in the general election to an independent. In that election a write in candidate finished third with about 10% of the vote. This year I am hoping that the current Sheriff will go down to defeat to the current write in candidate. What a write in candidate has to be approved by the Secretary of State in your state to count. Yes you could vote for who ever you wanted to vote for, but if the person you wrote in was not approved before the election it will not count. The the reason to go write in is because a candidate decides to throw their hat into the race after the deadline to file as a candidate. Their name will not be on the ballot but any vote for them will count, if the candidate submitted a petition to the Secertary of State for approval.
