Door bell ringing at odd hours!

Have you ever had to answer doorbells at odd hours and how did you react if you do? Just recently, early in the morning I was suddenly awoke by commotion in the house just in front of us. I was trying hard to sleep, then suddenly our doorbell rang. The guy wanted to ask some address in the neighbourhood. I was so furious. Later I thought about the incident, it can be dangerous to answer strangers at odd hours. And on the other hand, it may be geniune need for anybody also. How do you act upon such incidents?
