I just sent myself two faxes for free through faxzero. I have always wanted to try it out but never got around to it. There are limitations of only up to 2 pages and the file type can only be pdf or doc, or it allows you to type a message. There is also a commercial cover letter but is quite low key, nothing objectionable. Limit of 2 faxes per day.
I guess if you have documents to send and they are hard copy, you would need to scan them and convert them to pdf or will your scanner save to a doc format I am not sure. This can be done for free with the right software something like Cute PDF so I say go ahead and use faxzero, it works.
You can also send a fax up to 15 pages for $1.99 paypal only.

I think this is one of the last free fax services http://www.faxzero.com there are limitations, see my post below.
