How can I get involved in suicude prevention/awareness??

I had a friend when I was in h.s. a few years ago commit suicide, and it's something that I still really have not gotten over. He should still be here today. He was such an amazing person. He was smart, talented, eccentric, always upbeat, and he was so off the wall. I don't want anyone else to commit suicide whether I know them or not. I would like to get involved in suicide awareness/prevention and help those who are hurting in some way. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I may go about this?? Thanks.
