When you are used to pets, you can communicate with your pets even if they don't know how to talk. I know what my dog wants to relay to me according to his reactions and moves. I know when he wants to tell me that he is hungry or he wants to do his thing. I could easily discern what my dog needs when he looks at me with pleading eyes. That means he is hungry. When he stands in front of me and try to climb into my lap, he wants to be loved and petted.
Dogs have their own sign language and you must be keen enough to be able to discern what they mean.
