Death penalty - justifiable?

Some countries still take it upon themselves to kill their own citizens. You kinda have to ask whether it can ever really be justified when in reality it is the choice of many to murder an individual. Murder typically is an act against the law of the land however when the law supports it then it becomes an execution sanctioned by the state. Yes sometimes people pretty much seem to deserve it... those who kill and rape children for instance. it is hard to not want to kill them yourself. However the actual act of executing them is an act of state permitted murder in it's own right. Is it justifiable?
