Do you think the EU is causing a breakdown in individual country's identity? (Are we loosinf our nationalities?)
What are your thoughts about the European Union?

I would imagine that this is a fear experienced by most of the population in each member country.
The idea of a mutually beneficial group is fine, but as you say we are gradually becoming members of the European Union at the cost of our own nationality.
I will need to renew my passport soon, which saddens me because I shall not receive another British passport but a small booklet type passport as an EU member. I believe it is only a matter of time before Britain adopts the Euro, at which time another peice of my heritage will fade into history.

The same fear has been expressed here in the UK.
When Poland joined the EU there was a massive influx of people into Britain looking for work. I have no problem with this because the Polish people that I have met are very hard workers and earn their wages.
However, we do not have the capacity to accommodate another mass intake of workers from new member countries.

I certainly know what you mean though. When the immigrants are hard workers or only leaving for the opportunity to work and make money, I don't see the problem either. You are right though that the "desireable" countries are not going to be able to handle all the immigrants that come. However, I see the problem here as something different than the Polish going to work.... when this specific country becomes EU my country will be in for some serious trouble as this country I speak of.... the people like it here and they don't work. They live off the public programs and are responsible for the majority of hate crimes happening to women and homosexuals. When they become EU I feel this country will become just like theirs....

I always thought that England shouldn't adopt the euro because the pound is heavier. It is worth more and wouldn't adopting the euro be like downgrading? I would see it that way. I think that EU only benefits developing countries and not already established economically successful countries. (Like England, Belgium, Netherlands etc....) Developing countries like Czech Republic and Slovakia.... Their countries benefit with all the trade agreements because they are countries with a fair amount of poverty. If they go on the Euro that means that their currency will finally be worth something (because it is the euro) so no doubt it appears more appealing for the like.... My only fear is that if and when a specific country I'm not nameing.... is allowed in.... the country will empty as it has been doing already, but much faster.... I don't like it because they most defintaly want to change other country's societies and ways of life. Adding to further breakdown in national identity. (amongst other things.)

I think that it only benefits Eastern Europe as that is where most of the developing countries are.

I think we are losing out national identity because of it, but that is just my opinion.

What exactly is the EU? I know it stands for European Union but what is the idea of it? I know that it makes it a pain for foreigners to get jobs anywhere in Europe but what else does it do?

The idea is to unite european countries. It unifies member countries agriculture, fisheries, foreign and security policies.... ya ya ya ya in essance it is like making countries in Europe into something similar to states in the US. (The easiest way to put it.) Except that power over the country is not handed over to make one single country. Like one big exclusive club.
It does make it nearly impossible for citizens of non-eu countries to obtain employment. However EU citizens can travel to other EU countries and live, work and invest in a snap. (Some EU countries are smarter and make it at least a little hassle.)
I do not hold an EU passport because I am Romanian. My boyfriend sponsers my residency and let me tell you it is expensive paperwork! I can work and such here now though because of that.
I am not terribly for the EU as I see countries losing their way of life, but don't get me stated on that or I get flamed.... I am foreign here, but the difference is I am actively integrating myself with this countries way of life. I do not expect them to change or make consessions for me as others seem to do....
