I learned today that when you are in jail or on probation you do not have the right to vote in goverment elctions. What do you feel about this? I am still unsure.

EVER GOT ARRESTED BEFORE...EVER BEEN TO JAIL.. JUST CAUSE YOUR IN JAIL DOES NOT MEAN YOU A TRUE CRIMINAL ONLY LISTED AS A CRIMINAL TO THE LAW..BUT IN MY MIND AND MANY OTHER A CRIMINAL IS ONE WHO COMMITS A HORRIFIC CRIME MURDER TO NAME ONE...MY BOYFRIENDS WAS IN JAIL FOR ALMOST 2MONTH BECAUSE HE GOT PULLED AND WAS LISTED AS A HABITUAL DRIVER SO THAT NOT A CRIME TO ME...PEOPLE ALSO GO ON PROBATION FOR OR END UP IN JAIL FOR THINKS THEY DIDNT DO.. HEY PEOPLE ARE INNOCENT AND STILL FOUND GUILTY NOW I CAN SEE IF YOU WERE TALKING BOUT PRISON SOMEWHERE WHERE PEOPLE ARE IN FOR LONG TERM BUT HEY YOU SHOULD STILL HAVE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHO GOING TO RULE OVER YOU CAUSE UNLIKE PRISON JAIL IS A LESS THEN A YEAR THING MOST OF THE TIME...AND A PERSON WILL BE OUT AND WHAT PRESIDENT OR GOVERNOR WE HAVE WILL HAVE AN AFFECT ON THAT PERSON.

i agree NOT EVERYONE who is in jail is a bad person or a true criminal. I think they should have rights like everyone else.

pretty much everyone in prison is innocent(note: i'm being sarcastic) ....really you break the law and you are convict (yes some people are convicted when they are innocent but this is a very small minority)you forfiet your rights.

I never heard that about probation.. In jail I'm not bothered by that.. but also any felon cannot vote, and some felonies are rather minor to me.. I think it should be violent felons cannot vote..

I think felons convicted of certain crimes have their voting rights taken away permanetly not all.

If they are convicted of a felony, they should lose their right to vote. If they disagree with that, they shouldn't have committed the crime.

I believe that as part of punishment for a crime, you should also loose the priviledge to participate in elections. It was great to see an ex-felon on here, sharing this viewpoint. I understand that not everyone in jail is a horrible person, but if you break the law, then you loose rights.

Every citizen of the country is expected to know and understand the laws of the land. When you break those laws, you are forfeiting your rights, as laid out in the Constitution. That's actually where Miranda Rights come from ("You have the right to remain silent, etc..."). Essentially, when you are arrested for any reason, and they read you your Miranda Rights, those are your only rights until your unsupervised release into society. These rights don't include voting. Now, I'm not sure how I feel about this. There are a lot of elections that happen that could very easily affect the way life in jail is, and on that note, I think that they should have some say. However, I cannot argue with the logic of the whole thing: If you disobey the laws of the country, you are forfeiting the rights afforded you by the country. It's a puzzling debate.

I would say no right to vote while you are in jail. Once you are out on parole, and attempting to resume life, then I think you should be able to vote. Loosing voting privileges should be understood as one thing you loose when you decide to break the laws of the land, especially when it is serious enough to put you in jail.

I agree with this, and I always have. I see voting as a priveledge and not a right. Criminals give up that priveledge when they commit a crime. I know people make mistakes when they're young, but I don't think people in jail or on probation should be able to vote.

No, I don't believe they should have the right to vote, as they made their choice in life. They should not have the ability to infulence the lifes of others by voting.
