Well customer service is important TO ME because if I don't get good customer service I won't be a customer of that business again or for much longer. I don't care how good or cheap a product might be, if I get poor customer service from the company, I will complain and/or make steps to stop being their customer.
I have always provided excellent levels of customer service in my jobs, be it to external or internal customers and I expect the same in return AND I don't expect people to expect a tip for giving me good customer service. If they do over and above in their job if they are (for example) a waiter/waitress I might consider it but they should not assume that I will give them my hard earned money just because they smiled at me.
