Do you believe in "big government" or "small government"?

One of the big questions in the US now that Obama has won is whether he is going to expand the influence of the federal government. President Bush also did a lot to make the government much "bigger". My question to all of you is whether you think the federal government should play a large or a small role in the lives of citizens? Is it their job to provide us with the things we need, or should that be left up to state and local governments and private citizens? What are your views?

Tell me about it. The good thing about this election is it will force the Republican party to do some deep soul searching. They really got away from their roots with Bush. It is time to go back to "small government", "fiscal responsibility". Those are the two major rules of the party that Bush broke. The party has to go back to them to get support back.
Between loosing the Presidential race and all those seats in congress (last election and this one). It should show them they have lost their way need to find their way back onto the right track.

I am a firm believer and supporter of the tenth amendment. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people" This was a pretty decent piece of wisdom from the founders that seems to be lost in todays America. My hope is to eventualy push the federal government back to the margins that were intended through legislation in this state that mankes many unconstitutional acts by the federal government a violation of state law. It has become blatently clear that the federal government has no intention of honoring the republic so it is now more important than ever to take this nation back state by state.

Well said. It seems like recently the federal government has interpreted the Constitution to mean that if it isn't expressly stated that they CAN'T do something, then they are welcome to do it. It has begun to get a little scary, considering how easy that makes it for the government to do things without our consent.

I wish for a government that can fit inside the Constitution. Now I am not just speaking about fiscal issue, but that is a big issue, I also believe that government has very little place concerning social issues. I believe in letting the individual self regulate their own lives. I believe in economic Darwinism where companies survive or fail based upon the free market. Of course to do this the market must be free or you will not get the benefit of the survival of the fittest.

We need to make government smaller. In many states the government is becoming the largest employer. The more government workers the more votes for big government. Rep Barney Frank wants to cut the Military by 25%. So lets cut government by 25% as the Military is a Constitutional mandate for the government.

I don't think cutting the military by 25% is a good idea at all! The answer to smaller government is not leaving us as sitting ducks for our enemies. Our military is already stretched too thin just in fighting in Iraq. Imagine if we ever have to fight a larger country or several countries at once?

I'm usually an advocate for small government, but I'd settle for a medium one if it works out that way and does well in its own right.
The government in Washington, in a general sense, is supposed to cover our needs.
The rest, things we want are left up to our local governments.
I believe that's how our system was intended to be.
For example; there's a ton of things we want, but in the truest sense of the word (ignoring recent events, anyway) there's very little we really need.
That's definitely one of the more important questions about the Obama Presidency, methinks.

I say small government. We have all seen on more than one occasion how our fine government can screw things up when they get involved...

Oh I believe in smaller government. Studies have shown that when people pay less taxes, they contribute more to charities. People should definately take care of their fellow man, but it should not be mandatory. I wish that we could pick, where our tax dollars go. I think that would prove what part of government we were really willing to pay for. I know what I'm not willing to pay for, but I guess that will be my next discussion.
