Can you sleep while you are standing?

I am not sure if it is possible for anybody to sleep when he/she is standing on his/her feet. The other day I was told by one of my friends that the horse can sleep when they are standing on feet on the fields or anywhere! I did not believe his words. But I was doubly astonished to hear from one of my relatives that even some human can sleep while standing on feet! Even if they fall asleep while standing on feet, they do not fall down! I did not belive his words either.
But yesterday when I was walking through a village, I saw this little girl standing on their home yard. She was standing like this (the picture added). I asked her mother what she (the little girl) was doing. The mother smiled and answered that she (her daughter) was sleeping! I was not sure if she was joking or she was actually serious. But I took her photo for you, the fellow myLotters!

Yes it is possible to sleep when standing. The police man do this.It is their regular practice.When they are on duty in the night they have no scope to sleep in the bed.So they try to make it habit to sleep by standing.When they are on group duty they sleep on feet one after another.So don't think police are foolish.

The little girl is so cute! I have no idea if she is sleeping or not, but if you can sleep walk, why can't you sleep stand? I would think all the muscles relax when you sleep, but it is possible to sleep standing up. Maybe the little girl just has a quirk and tends to do that.

Well if she's really sleeping then she's having a really good dream, cause she's smiling. lol.
As for me, I haven't tried sleeping while I'm standing. And if I did sleep while I'm standing, then I would definitely fall. I have tried sleeping while sitting though...

LoL! Don't you know that human being has a natural tendency to smile in between a deep sleep? If anybody smiles while sleeping, then you should assume that he/she is dreaming a good dream! Thanks.

To this picture i cant accept as there is no need for someone at this age require to sleep while standing thats also in mid of sun light. basically i seen some peoples on public transport sleep while standing even me too sometimes because of tired and no option to lay down

no, i couldn't really sleep while standing. I will find some shelter of myself around where i feel comfortable..but i don't think so, because i never experience felt sleepy just standing around, maybe if i will try to do it myself with friend who will take noted if i really fall asleep while standing then i will try. I will find sometimes standing while i am exhausted and i will bring friend to assist me whenever i fall asleep.

I can't sleep while I'm standing because my leg veins really hurt when I'm standing for few hours motionless. There was one classmate of mine back in college who has sleep abnormality, he slept while waiting in line in the enrollment area and when he's on the jeepney. We his classmates worry a lot about him but I don't know if his family look for a cure on it. It's still not comfortable to sleep while standing because your body does not relax that well. ^^,

lol. that's crazy. i can't sleep while i'm standind. that's something i find very hard to do. maybe people who are able to do that experience microsleeps or narcolepsy, that's what i know based on my learning in psychology class.

I can't imagine that also. It is just impossible for me to sleep while standing.
It's all because I'm with so bad sleep. I wake up after every small sound and so.. It's impossible for me to sleep when it's not dark enough. That all annoys me sometimes.

Well,in this world ,nothing is impossible.Have you watch the cartoon"Slam Dunk",there's a boy called Liu Chuanfeng,he can even sleep when he is riding the bicycle.Sounds inconceivable? So if you tell that someone can fall asleep when standing,I will not feel strange at all.
