Fruit loops! My husband loves fruit loops - I don't want to spend $4.59 on a box when I can spend $3.99 on a bag of the generic and get twice as much. So I buy the generic and put it in the cereal container before he sees it. He thinks I buy name brand! I do this with more then just the cereal! Do you ever switch a name brand for a generic and not let any one know? Do you have any other food confessions???

Awww that is sneaky ... but clever lol I do that too ... we need to watch our expenses ... I also sneak in vegetables or "healthy choices" in the food i prepare, ... like I will add vegetable in the spagetti sauce ... but first i put everything in the blender so noone notices ;-)) Or I had oatmeal to my homemade pancake (from the oatmeal cereals you can find in the baby aisle ... it's great to add to cakes and so on and you hardly notice the taste I also sneak in whole wheat pasta when I cook pasta, half white half brown, and if you pour a sauce on it noone will notice and your family has a healthy serving of whole grain :D Dont feel bad ..sneak in sneak in eh eh

Actually we trained our kids to look for the generic brands instead of the name brands. They're most of what we use. It was a little more difficult to pound the fact that it tastes the same if it's shaped like Dora the Explorer or have Hanna Montana on the label but will cost half as much. With the savings over a few weeks you could actually buy a doll or something with the savings. Fortunantly they get that now too.

Ohhh sneaky. I've never switched the cereal. I've done it to coffee at work however or mixed some generic in with the name brand to make it last longer. The boss never notices lol

I'm the only one at home that drinks coffee and I don't mind buying the name brand just because I only make it on the weekends so it lasts a long time! But thats a good idea!!!

That's hilarious! I thought I was the only one who did that ... lol! My husband is against anything which is low fat, so I keep the high fat containers and put the low fat products into them. He's only ever noticed once. The cereal is a great idea!

Just goes to show that your mom must be a very intelligent woman ... lol!!! Seriously, I really think it depends on the individual product as to which tastes better. Sometimes I think the generic brands are actually much nicer, but sometimes they are awful. A lot of it is trial and error, but when one's family is influenced simply by brand name packaging, why not do the big switcheroo when the cheaper product tastes the same or better?!

I heard of doing this to fool the kids, but never the husband. Kudos! I live alone and I buy Nearly everything that I can store brand. There are a few things brand name that I've tried generic and found they just don't set well on my palate, but they are few and far between.

We have the issue with baked beans too! I have cans of Campbells in the panrty and store brand baked beans hidden! I use the store brand I couldn't tell you how long those Campbells cans have been in there! He thinks I am using them but I am really using the store brand! Since he doesn't shop or cook he doesn't realize there have been the same 2 cans of baked beans in the pantry for months!

Most of the genereic stuff is as good as the "real" stuff if you ask me. I always used Tupperware for my cereal so that helped out a bit, they never knew what brand it was!

No, but I would love to. My girlfriend's daughter thinks there's a big differance. The sugar pops. She said the Meiger brand tastes like cardboard. I am so glad to hear someone actually does this. My brother did that to my mom with bottled water. She insisted on getting the gallon bottled water. When it got low and she didn't know, he fioled it with tap water and put it back in the refrigerator.

My husabnd thinks he gets the real thing. I started slow. Putting just a little of the generic in with the brand. Then a little more until it was all generic! It all goes into a tupperware and he doesn't know the differance!! I shop while he is at work and get rid of all the evidance before he gets home LOL!

Some thing he knows I buy store brand but when we first got together he asked for 3 things in name brand - baked beans, cereal, and oreos! That was fine in the begining but after buying a house and having a kid I switched the cereal and baked beans. I haven't figured out how to switch the oreos yet but I do conventely forget to buy them every other grocery shop! LOL

haha I do that with the oreos too and chocolate chip cookies. My son notices it when he's helping me pack the groceries away in the cupboards and I just pretend to say "oh really? hmmm must of fallen out or something" LOL

If I pull a switcheroo, I get rid of all the evidence. If nobody can tell the difference, I don't say anything. If they do notice a difference, I ask, is it better or not? If they say they like it, I just say, maybe the company changed the recipe or something. If they don't like it, I will confess to switching the brand for store brand, then I don't do it again.*L*

*LOL* Then I think I would just keep doing what you are doing. My mom used to mix powdered milk in a milk jug to try to fool us. I always knew the difference. Even if she was able to mix half a gallon of milk with the powdered stuff to make a full gallon, I knew.

Maybe if you switched back to the name brand he would not like it as he has become so used to the generic the other may taste funny now. I am sure a lot of the generic come out of the same factory anyways but you are paying extra for the name brand.

I do that with the kids all the time! My step kids are so picky that they won't eat almost anything. They liturely look through their food to make sure nothing is added to it. There are so many times they have eaten something and not know what was in it. One time I couldn't help it I thought it was so funny. I make steak and smoothered it with cream of mushroom, but then I also left some plain. My eldest step son HATES mushrooms. He is a very big eater. He had one with no mushrooms and then he asked what kind the other one was I said it was the same steak just has gravy on it. He had about 5 of the ones with mushrooms on them (they were smaller steaks) and I couldn't help it no more I just couldn't keep it in so I told him what the gravy was, he ate the one he had on his plate like it was a disease! I told him it was all in his head because before he knew what was on it he was eating them like he'd never aten before then all of a sudden he didn't like them no more. I think a majority of the times when kids don't like something it is just in their heads. Theres a lot of other things I do too just to get a kick out of watching the kids

The only cereal I won't buy generic is Raisin Bran. I have to get the brand in the purple box. I think that is Post or Kellog's one. In any event, the other raisin brans aren't as good as the real deal. Other than that, we do buy a lot of generic. IMO, generic diapers are no better or no worse than Pampers or Huggies. We usually buy the generic Target diapers and they work just as well on our 5 month old as the expensive Pampers or Huggies. For one of my baby showers, it seemed like every guest bought me a package of Pampers. I had diapers coming out of my ears! The only other thing I don't skimp on is laundry soap. I have to use Tide because of my skin allergies. Other than that, pretty much everything else we buy can be store brand or generic labeled. It doesn't matter to us.

We used Target diapers too! My daughter was allergic to every other diaper we tried. We had received a lot at our baby shower too and couldn't use them because my daughter was allergic. I went to target and figured heck for that price why not try them we did and she was FINE in them. Love it!! For laundry soap we use ALL free and clear for our daughter and what ever for us.

Okay, that is sneaky. But I must confess I have done this more than once on my family as well. They all think they are eating name brand stuff and aren't. There are a few things i don't switch out. As my husband and I prefer the name brand. But there are many items he does not know about. Nor the kids. cereal is one of them. Lol.

I feel bad about it in a way because my husband doesn't ask for much in name brand ... fruit loops, baked beans, and oreos. The fruit loops and baked beans get switched. The oreos don't because well I can't figure out how when Oreos SAY oreo on them! LOL However I conventaly forget to buy them about every other shop. Opps!

my s/o likes name brand everything lol. i did pull a switch on him with coffee, he always buys folgers, i bought the store brand and dumped it into the folgers container (the large container) and he didn't even notice the difference. he is one that if there is a difference in taste or texture he will say something. the only generic brand of any item i have noticed is green beans, they seem to be more stringy.

Hahaha. I have those big plastic cereal containers and put the honey nuts and the honey bunches of oats - generics in them as soon as I get them home. I don't know if I'm fooling anyone, but no one says anything about it. Food confessions - hmmm - things like hiding something I really like in the back of the freezer so it's all mine?

That sounds like something my husband would do to me. Infact, if I send him to the store almost everything he comes home with is store brand. I'll occasionally make vegetarian enchiladas and not tell him there's no meat. And really, the beans are meaty enough to fool him. Beans are SO much cheaper so I wish I could find a way to switch them out more often.

Lol! I live alone so i dont have to do this. What some people dont realize is that generic is just as good as name brand. Sometimes even better. There are a few things that are good name brand but most the stuff i buy is generic. Any one who thinks named brand everything is better must have been born with golden spoon in mouth.

No he knows that I use a lot of generic but he asked from the start that I use a few name brand things ... baked beans must be campbells (they aren't LOL) and fruit loops must be fruit loops (they aren't LOL) and last oreos must be oreos I can't figure out how to switch them because they SAY oreo!
