How do you comfort someone who is serious?

Please if you are not going to reply in order to be helpful then leave this topic alone.I have a friend who is seriously scaring me talking about ending his life.I have tried to give him reasons as to why it is just not the path to take.If anyone can give me an ideal or some type of helpful information concerning this I would appreciate it.
