Just for sometime there is a controversy going on in Malaysia, a predominantly muslim majority country on the subject of yoga. Since yoga is of Indian origin, and both islam and christianity has imposed many restrictions on its followers from practising this simple form of exercises.
the argument put forward by opponents of yoga is that since it is of hindu origin, it will affect the faith of the muslims practicing yoga. he says yoga can make muslims deviate from islam. so goes the argument of those favouring ban. read more on it from this link :
http://in.news.yahoo.com/43/20081107/876/twl-ruling-on-yoga-ban-for-malaysian-mus_1.html
one news paper asked how can stretching & breathng can threaten islam.
if that was the case, muslims should stop stretching and stop brething so that it conforms with islamic ideology.
this incidence clearly shows how uninformed those at the helm of decision making in islam. One is the chairman of fatwa council and the other a university lecturer. it is clearly evident from their reaction that they have not got any fact about yoga. they are merely acting on ignorance. the silverlining is that many malaysian muslims are practising yoga for better health and it has not affected any of their faith.

hi tulip ...
just dont know what to comment as ... this has been going on in the community, but no worries they will soon come up with something which is 99% originated from yoga and claim it to be from the Quran ... as usual ...
this just creats new business trends ... where they say no to the original and promote the duplicate, give it another 6 months and a new form of "Islam Goya" will replace "Hindu Yoga"
cheers

i appreciate your good sense of humor. thanks.
what you said has been happening today. read or watch Zakir Naik. you will get the same feeling. one of his argument recently i heard on youtube - there are two kinds of water. sweet and salt. sweetness and salty are two characteristics that can he added or deducted. he forgot there is a independent state of water which can be devoid of these two states.

tulip,
have u seen lotus leaf, try pouring water on it, it will roll and dance on the leaf and find ways to drop, it is like the leaf has a oily surface ...
well, that is muslim ...you can prove anything with logic, they will still refer to quran and define it to suit them ...
quran has the most contradiction in their arguments ... simple eg.
i. they say they are peace loving people
ii. they say kill the person who does not submerge to islam
believe me the islam yoga would have been practiced by muhamad, and will be referred to some verses
cheers

sanjana,
it must be about a decade or so back, some pakistani scholar (no idea if he is one) gave an interview to Doordarshan India - the state run television channel of government of india that the namaz is some closer to yoga. then he went on explaining its significance etc and how muhammad understood its usefulness etc. probably somebody has proved your prediction true.

It is the need of the day for Muslims to produce scholars well versed in islam as well as have knowledge about the world.
Scholars without the knowledge about worldly matters do create a lot of problem.
During the time of King Abdul Aziz when the telephone was first introduced it was thought to be a mouthpiece of the devil.
It was only when they heard the Quran on the phone did they agree that it was a gift of science.
Similarly the Christian Priests refused to believe that earth rotated despite a scientific proof.
It is ignorance by a few people not a particular religion.
