How many meals a week do you eat together as a family?

I try to make it about 4-6 times a week. But that doesn't always work when you have a teenager in the home. When our son still lived at home we were lucky if we could get 1-2 meals together in a week. Now that it is just our daughter at home we are working at having more family meals together.
I think it pulls a family together. You get to discuss your days activities or work out problems together. It just helps to bond all of you together as a family unit.
When I was a child my Mom worked at night but my Dad, brother and I ate dinner together virtually every night until I got a job as a teenager. Then it was almost impossible for the 4 of us to sit down together. We would still try to manage the weekend meals together though.
So how is it in your family? How many mealtimes do you all sit down together would you say you average in a week?

I have a small family which is inclusive of my son and husband. My son is only five years old but I like us all to enjoy a family meal on a regular basis.
I really do believe that it sets a good precedent for my son and the values in which I would like to instill in him.
We are going to become more bonded together through this system and I can't see anything wrong with it. Thanks for your positive post.

Welcome to myLot MKBORA!!
Yes I think it like a mini celebration that you made it through the day and have a haven to come to and eat dinner together.

We are always taking the breakfast and dinner meals everyday, so in a week the only meals that we are not together are at lunch time for my kid is in school, my husband is in the office, and my 2 nieces are in their different department college school.
But this week i could not say that we can still be together eating meals for my mother in law was confined in the hospital so our meals is not prefect as it is.

Hi
Growing up my mom was a teacher and then we were born took some time off and my dad got done with work around the same time we got outta school . My mom made dinner and we would all eat around 4 or a little later together .
When my bro and me got older we had things to do and dinner time was always different or dinner would be saved for us , so i would say half the time then .
Now its just me and my fiance and we eat almost ever meal together . he half the time will help too

since my kids are still young, we make it a point to eat together as a family during evening, so at the tick of 5:30pm, my hubby usually wants to go home as soon as he can... but since he's so loaded in his work, there are times he comes home late...

There is a lot of that happening now a days. My husband can get home from any time between 4:30 to 6:30pm. It is really hard to make dinner for the correct time. But he usually can tell me in the mid afternoon when he approximately he will be home so I can have dinner ready close to when he will be home. Or he cooks when he gets home early sometimes.

Before I went to university to further my studies, my family always have dinner 2 times everyday. Usually we have meals together for lunch and dinner. But now because I study far from home, we only have dinner and lunch together when I go back home for holidays.

I understand that going away to school can make it impossible to have dinner together. But when you get back perhaps you can start having dinner together again.
All the best in school.

Now I live in a small city and my family is rather small . Nowadays, the family members include my husband and I. We usually eat together about 14 times per week. The most probable reason is that our home is not far from our working place. So we can gather together to have meals. We usually eat out in the mornings for we are pressed for time then.

Wow that is a lot of meals together. Good for you two. I wish we could manage that but my husband works out of town during the week so we can only manage dinners together with our daughter.

when i was younger we used to have one night always dedicated to family dinners, but then the kids got jobs and we were working late so things changed. we are lucky if we even get one night on sundays for a family dinner, but everyone still works and the schedules are conflicting so its pretty difficult.

That does happen when the kids get older and start their own way in their lives. I am glad you still manage at least one night a week.

To be honest, never. I eat before hubby comes home, and kid isn't hungry yet. So I eat at 4:30 by self, hubby eats around seven, kid eats whenever he is hungry. Besides I don't have an empty table for anyone to sit around, the kitchen table is a catch all here.
But then again, kid is actually a young adult, hubby works till 5 and I need to eat for medical reasons. *besides then I can watch my show in peace...lol

With University having just started up even though I'm not on residence it takes a lot of time away from the whole 'together as a family' meals, mostly because of night classes, work or socializing on residence. Aside from that since my dad is usually busy regardless until later in the night, and my brother works most weeknights, so it doesn't generally end up happening as a full family too often except on the occasional Sunday really. I think people are getting almost too busy in this day and age where time is money to really sit down too often for a full meal, at least from my perspective.

That's what happens when kids go away to school. At least you have the Sundays here and there. The same thing happened when I went away to school. I know it is difficult to do but it is an important link for a family I feel.

Usually in weekdays i only eat with together them only once a day because i eat my lunch at work and i usually go home late already for dinner but there are times that i am able to have dinner with them. Usually on saturdays and sundays i really make it a habit to eat together with my family because those are the only times where we could eat together during lunch and dinner because i dont have work on those days. There are times when i go home for dinner after work that i eat alone because im already very late for dinner and i think it is better that they eat dinner ahead because there are times that i dont know what time ill be arriving home.

I know all about that. I had a job that I worked until 11pm 5 nights a week for quite a while. I hated missing mealtimes with my family. The complained a lot as well. I fixed that by getting a different shift. They were a lot happier with that.

I know what you mean it is very important to eat as a family and it seems that not enough people sit down at the table and have meals together as they used to and there are a lot of commercials on Nickelodean about people famous people who support having meals together at the family table,I remember when I was a kid me and my parents used to have most of our meals together as a family at the dining room table but then when I got older we still ate together a lot but sometimes I would eat in my room while watching television, which always was good for eating dinner and I like watching television while I am eating, and now that I am with my fiance and she lives at my parents house with me,we still eat quite often at the dining room table with my parents, especially when my mother cooks, which she usually cooks anywhere from three or four times a week, and sometimes when she picks up food if me and my fiance are up we will eat with my parents at the dining room table, but if we have potluck where we have to fix something ourselves,or if we are asleep and get up after they have finished eat when will usually take the food to our room and eat while watching television,or we might sit at the table and eat,or if my mom is in bed,and my dad is at work,or if my dad is in bed,and my mom is at work,we might sit in the den and watch television on the bigger television while we eat.

Well at least that is something. It really does make a difference to keep a family feeling like a unit instead of just a bunch of roommates.
