There is a debate going on in my house. My husband and my son are always in a row about which game system would be better for us to buy. To many people this may not make any sense at all, but to gamers this is a very big deal. So I am asking for some of the experienced gamers to give your opinion. Should I buy an X Box 360 or a Playstation 3 and why. What is the difference?

Well, it all depends on the things you want in a gaming console. I myself have a Playstation 3 because I like the games that it has but you could say the same thing about the xbox 360.
Normally when someone asks this question my normal answer is:
Buy the console that has the most games you are interested in.
But in your case it might be a little more complicated. Who is going to pay for the console? The parents or the child? If its the child than let him buy the console he wants because he should be able to buy it because he pays for it, right?
But if its the parents... well. you simply could say "We pay for it so we should be the ones who decide what to buy."... right?
There is not really a huge difference in those 2 consoles. But I can try to list them.
Xbox 360:
It was released a year before the Ps3 so it has more games out.
And it is cheaper than a Ps3.
It can play DVD's (I mean movie DVD's).
But if you want to play games online (using the internet) (assuming that you have already a internet connection at home) you would have to pay for a service called Xbox Live. I am not exactly sure about the price but last time I checked it it was around 50 USD a year.
It can play some old xbox games. (I am talking about the old Xbox)
Playstation 3:
It can play DVD's and Blu-Ray disks. Many people say that the quality of the movies on BluRay disks is a little higher than the one on DVD's but you most probably should be able to get most movies in either DVD or BluRay format. So the only important factor there would be your TV. Do you have a High Definition TV? Would you even notice the quality change? But it is not like you would have to buy BluRay disks. And as much as I have heard the playstation 3 is the cheaper BluRay player you can get so far.
You can play games online and you don't have to pay for it but the service is not as great as it might be on the xbox 360.
There are 2 kinds of Playstation 3. One that can play Playstation 1 and 3 games. And another one that can play Playstation 1,2 and 3 games. So if you are interested in play for playstation 2 games you should ask for a Playstation 2 game backwards compatible Playstation 3. the only drawback there might be that those Playstations 3's are not produced anymore meaning that they might be a little expensiver than the ones that can only play Ps1 and Ps3 games. (note: no matter what Ps3 you get, it will be able to play most playstation 1 games)
I hope this will help you decide which one to get. But as said before. The most important thing for me are the games on each console and not all those features.
Please remember that not all games are available on both those consoles. Some are only available on a xbox 360 and some are only available on a Playstation 3. So make sure that the console you are buying has the games you are interested to.
So good luck with your purchase and have fun with the games. ;)

Thanks. Good point about affordability and who's going to buy it. I'm buying it and I don't play at all. But I still want them to be happy, you know?

Well as a gamer myself I would appreciate any kind of console as long as I get to play the games. You should probably just ask them why they are so interested in each console and why they think that it would be the better choice.
Or perhaps let them pay half for the console.
And don't forget that each game costs around 60 USD or less. But I goes that you son/man will be paying for them, right?
I am sure that they will be happy with whatever you decide. And if not, they will learn to like it with the time. :)

Even though PS3 has a bit advance due to it's hardware. what matters to you guys is the games. which games you most likely, I mean. whats the point of having the most powerful console when you love the most of games from XBOX360. right? if your into XBOX games or the PS3. choose the most games you'll have to play and having fun.

So the PS3 is most advanced, but I would still do just as well to go with the X Box if they like the games for X Box, right?
