When do we change?

Last year I kept getting these mailing for little Indian children at some reservation school in South Dakota I think it was. Well my son who was 5 at the time wanted to know about it. So it sat him down and read it to him. For $15 it would provide a Christmas party for one of the classes. SO he got him a jar and went around collect change until he had the $15 to send these little children so they could celebrate Christmas too. Now I see so many adults who wouldn't help someone if there were bleeding to death at their feet. At what age do we change and why? I have tried to teach my children that while they may not have every toy they want they should be very grateful for the ones they do have because some people don't have any. My son who is now 6 would gladly pack up every toy he owns and give them to someone who had none. Yet some adults would rather throw away a perfectly good washing machine then give it to the single mom with 2 kids who has to haul everything and everyone to the laundry mat. As a lesson on helping those don't have my children collect food, cleaning supplies and hygeine items for the local battered women's shelter last year. They managed to collect 13 moving boxes of items. So why are children willing to help others and some adults wouldn't help someone if their lives depended on it?
