I think so, that it is a good factor if one is sociable in writing. It is important for a writer to have a broad knowledge on some things. More familiarity with certain group of people, places and things will give a chance to the writer to write more because he has a large bank of information in his head.It is also one good thing that he is an open-minded person. He must not only pay attention to his view but on others also so as to enhance his horizon.Remember that you will be having different readers also who have different thinking so you must be flexible in your writing to succeed and gain more readers.

I do believe you have to be social, not necessarily amicable, to be a good writer because real life is where most people get their ideas from. Some authors even base their characters onpeople they meet in real life. Unless, I guess, if you were writing about a fantasy world where there were no people, but I don't know how good a book that would be.

I don't really think it's a must. I'm not a very sociable person and I love to write. How good of a writer I am is subject to personal interpretation, but I feel like you can observe people a lot better...more objectively...from afar. There is a lot to be said for us quiet folk...we soak in crapload of information.
