It's a nice idea having your ex as a friend but it is not an easy thing to do. It will take a lot of sincerity and forgiveness before it becomes a reality. There are lots of reasons why couples separated such as betrayal, anger, conflict of interest, or loss of love and attraction. You're right about it not being an easy thing to do. My ex and I broke up over 2 years ago and we're both with different people now. Just recently, I have been able to put the past behind me enough to actually talk to him as a civilized adult. There was a lot of lies and deceit in our relationship that made it difficult to be his friend. It's made me feel better about what happened between us now that I'm able to look past it.
