Hi there,
I don't know what belief system you espouse, and which religious objects you're referring to, but for Christians, the creation and use of IDOLs is EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN (1 of the 10 commandments). God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth (John 4:22-25). Any object that's used to take the place of God/REPRESENT Him is an idol, and God's very much against it. There's plenty of references about this, in the Old Testament especially.
You specified Catholicism. This is actually ONE of the bones of contention between Catholics and Protestant Christianity (and why some think Catholics aren't Christians at all). It's definitely controversial, and something I'd prefer to discuss by PM (with those who call themselves Christians), if at all.

I appreciate your response, and your point is well taken. However, as you'd stated you're not Roman Catholic, then you cannot speak as one, nor for, them. I came from a place where R.C. is the predominant religion, and am very familiar with the practices and beliefs of this sect. Hence I know you're wrong in thinking that statues and such aren't worshipped there. It's probably not practiced by everyone, but neither is it discouraged to treat religious objects as if they were the real thing.
Everyone has a choice to worship wherever they wish. You have yours, I have mine - a place where biblical truth is taught, a gospel free of socialist/humanist ideas, and where I'm surrounded by those who LIVE out Christianity.

my objects of worship:
- candles
- big red bong
- herbal 'fuel' (psychedelics/hallucinogens)
- speakers playing proper trip music
- pen and paper, to sketch the visions
- camera, to record any other trip events
See you on the other side :D

Every religion that I can think of has its own symbolic representations that are used to focus philosophical thought. They should not be mistaken for idols. They are only a point of focus.
I am a Buddhist and in every Buddhist temple you will find Buddha images. These images are not themselves the subject of worship. They are meant as a physical representation of the thoughts and ideas of the Buddha. They are there to give us something to think about. There are many different representations of the Buddha and each one of these images says something about the teachings of Buddhism.
Religious symbols only become idols when people view them, not as the embodiment of an idea but as something that somehow contained the physical presence of the God in question. Very few people today actually believe that the symbols are the physical God.
Religious symbols are not gods, they are only one of many paths to God.

I guess it works in different kinds of people and use of an object I think is not wrong at all. There are just people that are in need of something they could touch or see to be able to somehow connect with people. It is just like us ordinary people sometimes it is not enough that we hear the voice of our loved ones that is why sometimes with the aid of a picture our loved for those person that are not physically present. Sometimes just by looking at these objects we are ignited by our faith and passion to be with them. They are what we call the visual people. So I guess it would depend on the person's way of expressing their faith and trust that is important.

Religion is not just about sunday or saturday worship. Its about trying to live its ideals each day. Its good if you can take your heart with you when you worship, but it is better if you can take also your neighbor with you. For religion is not just about you and God, its also about the communion of believers.

This is what i can say about this: If the said object you have mentioned was written in the holy scriptures then why not? if that was written in the bible then why not. Commandment is all i've got. I wont argue with any objects of worship if there's a supporting verse about this. You know i believed everything that was written in the bible. From Old Testament down to New Testament.
