For my parents so they can get into our house without any problems such as falling. They came over a couple of weeks ago and darn near fell off the back steps and that's when we said, "That's it! A ramp will be built" so hubby got the materials needed and built it right off the side of our long porch. It look great!! Don't you think so? I think hubby did a wonderful job! It matches the porch railings to a T! It looks like it was there all along!! Cool, huh? Now it has to be primed and then we'll paint it white like the rest of the porch and hubby is going to put some outdoor carpet on the floor of the ramp to help with traction. So what do you guys think of it? Pretty awesome, I think! lol

It looks fab! My roomie's dad and the neighbor across the street built one on to his porch after her mom had to have knee surgery. This is a great help not only for her, but us as well. She has since had both knees and both hips done. She has a friend who is mostly on either a wheel chair or walker that it helps get her into the house and when my mom went out one 4th of July it was a big help. There are still a few steps into the house from the deck, but they are small compared to the steep 4 steps onto the deck.

I know most everyone that can, will take the ramp instead of the steps - including the DOG!

Thank You!! It is nice to have especially when it comes to medical reasons. Who knows, we might need to use it ourselves one day. Our front porch steps are way too steep which is so dumb of the builder to have made it that way and some day hubby hopes to repair them to the right specifications but that'll be a while down the road, when we have the money to do so.

It looks great! That will be so nice. Your hubby needs rewarded. Can I make a suggestion that you do not cover it with carpet. They told us that we should not do that to ours as it will rot the boards. The suggestion that we had gotten was to mix some sand in the paint and make it gritty to give traction. We also used tar paper for roofing for the winter months one year. That worked great too. Be careful when it is a little frosty outside, as it will be like a skate rink. Good luck with it. It will make it so nice.

Thanks for that Thoroughrob!! Hubby likes that idea and is going to go with it!! So after we paint the top parts, we put sand in with the paint and paint the floor with it? Sounds easy enough! Cool!! Were you able to open the picture and rate it? I hope it's big enough to see for I tried!! lol

Yes, that is how and they told us to look at it and make sure there was enough sand when we spread it. If we were worried sprinkle it sand while it is still wet. Also I keep table salt on hand and on days it is frosty, I use it just to give a little extra grit. Our ramp is 33 ft and if we start sliding down with my sons wheelchair, we would be in big trouble!! I did bring up the picture, it really is nice. I did rate it. You are so lucky to have such a handy husband.

He made it to match the porch perfectly and I couldn't ask for a better one for it's so perfect!! Mom and dad have been by here a couple of times for dinner and loved the ramp! No more taking chances of them falling off the steps for the one time was enough for us!! Gosh, that was really scary!

Wow. Beautiful ramp. I like ramps also, not because I am old but I am on wheelchair hehe. That is why I like ramps which are functional and beautifully created just like your ramp. I appreciate people who can make good ramps because they really know what is the purpose of those ramps.

Thanks. He built it for my parents because both are getting up in age now and my mom had a really bad stroke in April and can't walk normal anymore. I want to get her a motorized chair but she won't hear of it. Maybe on her next appointment to her doctor, I'll go with her and mention it to him and see what he says. She's so dizzy all the time from the medication she has to take or she's sleepy from other medications so she's a perfect candidate for a wheel chair, if only I can get her to agree to one.

I wish I could borrow your hubby. I want a little deck or porch built on the back of my house at the back door. I step out the back door unto the first step and it is getting sort of complicated. Don't let the wind be blowing the storm door back towards me I can't get out that door at all then. I that is a wonderful entrance for your parents.

Hubby built one for us and he could do it for you too if we lived nearby. I'm in North Carolina, where are you? lol I know about small steps out back, that's what we had but not anymore. It's too darned dangerous, especially during ice storms.

You are right, when a person puts their mind to it, they can do anything. That is very true. Hubby did put his mind to it and he did a fantastic job and I'm very proud of him. Thanks Quincy!

Exactly. Dad almost fell while going down the darn steps and hubby and I had mom helping her down but luckily hubby was able to grab dad before he went completely down. It was pretty scary to say the least! To have one parent down is bad enough, we surely don't need both of them down!!

Thanks Kat!! I agree, he did a fantastic job! I'm really proud of him! I'd be more than happy to send him to your place to fix a few things but you're on one coast and we're on the other. Oh shoot!! He'd be more than happy to help out. If you're a friend of mine, you're a friend to him!!

I'm answering from my email so I cannot see the photo yet...it sounds like an expensive little exercise...it must be so hard for you to manage with so many expenses.
