I voted for Barack Obama even though I originally supported John McCain. A combination of things caused me to question my original choice and I am very confident about Obama's ability to do good things for this country.
It disappoints me to still see the same old fear mongering and objections to Barack. He's not the first president to call Americans to service to their country. John F. Kennedy, a man I greatly admire, believed in the importance of public service and most folks are familiar with his words, "Ask not what your country can do for you, as what you can do for your country." No one would dream of critizing him yet they're so quick to call Obama a Socialist for holding the same beliefs. In fact, John McCain co-lead the National Summit on Public Service at the John F. Kennedy Library in 2002 and was one of the lead sponsors of the Call to Service Act, which was a national service bill that would increase civilian and military volunteer opportunities across the nation. So, I guess McCain is a Socialist, too.
My four children were required to perform X number of community service hours in order to graduate from high school but suddenly it's a socialist ideal and a bad thing. My youngest, who just graduated from high school, would gladly volunteer in exchange for college money and this program will make it possible for some kids to be able to attend who normally couldn't because of the cost.
Those who scream about the tax increase to the wealthiest 1% of the taxpayers in this country fail to realize that the breaks big business has been getting all along have helped only big business and those at the top. It's the forgotten middle class who should be in favor of this...those who don't qualify for the breaks low income earners receive or the massive deductions businesses enjoy. The rich don't care about you or me. Businesses will not grow as long as people are too financially strapped to spend money.
Health insurance and medical care should not be limited to one segment of society and denied to the rest. People suffer and die because of the outrageous cost of healthcare in this country and no reasonable person should choose to let others die.
I could go on but I won't. Those who are against Obama will remain so until they benefit in some way from his policies. Little by little this country will move forward.
