Hi everyone! Reading is a good habit. I like to read books, magazines and short stories. It keeps me entertained on some boring times that I have nothing to do and during nights that I can't sleep. It helps me improve my vocabulary. I even have dictionary beside me ready for use in case I come across words that I'm not familiar with. But I like to read aloud. Well not that loud that others around me could here it but just enough that I could hear myself. I know its not a good habit but I find myself able to understand what I am reading if I actually hear it. Sometimes at nights when I read I whisper. If I don't hear myself, I find it hard to understand. Maybe that's why I also like audio books. I also make notes when I read. I put markers and shade the parts that I find important and that I should remember such as phrases, proverbs and even facts that I might find essential in my daily life. How about you? How do you read? Please do share!

Interesting question! I love reading and usually I do it silently. However, I am interested in acting as well - sometimes for my own benefit I will read pages aloud to myself in a different voice or accent. I find it good practice. Even though I practice reading aloud to myself all the time, I find it difficult to read aloud to other people and often stumble over my words. I rarely make notes, but that's because I'm slightly obsessive about keeping my books in mint condition. I do leave bookmarks or pieces of paper in areas of the book that I would like to remember. If something is difficult for me to understand I take a sheet of paper and lay it underneath the line I am trying to read - when I finish reading that line I move the paper down. I keep this up until I have finished the page. This method keeps me from getting ahead of myself and I understand what I am reading far better.

I'm not into acting but when I read stories I also have different voices for characters. Especially if its a funny story, I like to making funny voices. I like to read Disney Stories and I try to copy the voice of the character say, if its Mickey Mouse, I try to make it sound like Mickey hehe. Keep posting!

I am definitely somebody who reads quietly and do not recall ever reading out aloud to myself. If I was trying to read in a foreign language I would probably read aloud to help myself learn to pronounce words properly though. I don't mark or shade parts of books either really unless they are printed off documetns that are work related; but I do find that putting something I have read that I wish to remember in my own words on a separate sheet helps me retain information quite well.

My mom use to tell me that I should not mark or shade my book cause it makes it dirty. But I don't find it dirty rather I feel good that if I happen to shade a lot, that means I have learned a lot reading it. I also make notes on the last page of the book so my notes don't get mixed up with other notes. Enjoy reading!

That is an interesting discussion.Even though I read silently there are times I read an interestingly worded paragraph or line loud to myself to to savor it again.

Wow what a word, to SAVOR it again. I have never used that word hehe. But yes, it is good to read beautiful phrases aloud cause its meaning is felt more than reading it silently. Thanks for sharing!

Quietly, for me. I can sometimes distract myself by reading aloud, heh. I'll read aloud if I'm somewhat sleep deprived, because then the connect to my eyes to my brain sometimes...isn't that good, and the connection between your ears and your brain is never off and that helps. I try not to write in most books. There are some exceptions, like almanacs because they have calenders in them. It sort of feels...blasphemous almost, being the avid book lover as I am...to purposefully mark them =o Strangely contradictorily I like finding writing from other people in books. It'sinteresting seeing other people's thoughts inside a book.

Yeah, I think it is interesting to know what other people thinks and what they get after reading a book. If you ask me, I write down lessons I've learned from a certain book and things that relates to my life. Ciao!

I prefer to read silently that way I can concentrate on what I'm reading. But sometimes when I do memorizing, I read aloud but not disturbing anybody around me by doing so, I can easily memorize what I'm sopposed to memorize and understand it as well and that way I can practice when I do have declamation in school before but now I read silently especially reading novels, newspaper and magazines. I love reading!!! It educates me.

When alone, I prefer to read loudly. It makes make me understand more what I am reading. I also become aware of my pronunciation. I do also use dictionary beside me when I am reading in order for me to understand words which are not familiar to me.

I do a little reading due to shortage of time. But anytime I read, I make it with a silent reading. This has been a habit with me since my childhood. No doubt, reading is a good habit and regular reading can be better called as a healthy habit. As food is to body, reading is the same to mind! So we must always take well care to select and read (study) good books for a better view of life. Whether it is silent reading in my case or loud reading as in your case that is not the question. The main aim behind it is to study the facts and develop the level of our understanding the world through this. Thanks for this valuable discussion!

i love to read, do so every night for at least 1 hour if not more. i dont read outloud though..i find that rather annoying when others do it and im in the room. if i dont know a words meaning then, yes i will look it up in the dictionary. course while in school i was never very good at absorbing the lectures either, i did much much better at learning the subject when i was able to read it myself.

Aside from being a tv show watcher or a 'couch potato', I also consider myself as a reader of academic and comic books, newspaper articles, pocketbooks, and magazines. Usually, I read silently. But I have noticed myself that when I seem to be disturbed or stressed out, I tend to become out of focus or concentration; hence this results to my repetitive reading of an article. If this method still doesn't work for me to understand whatever I am reading, I resort to reading it aloud to myself. Unlike you, I'm not used to checking the meaning of words in the dictionary while I am reading. Often if I can't understand the meaning of a certain word, I try to get its meaning through context clues. But I guess it's a great practice to check it out from Mr. Webster. Also, I don't shade words or parts of any article which I find worth remembering. But when I was a student, I recall doing this for academic purposes. Anyway, I'd like to congratulate you for two reasons. One, you were successful to generate almost forty replies to this particular discussion of yours within just 21 hours. And, your discussion was able to make it to the 'top discussions' category.

Hi Iskayz, I'm a silent reader; and once I'm engrossed in a book, I can ignore everything around me. That's why I'm able to read with the TV on, in public places or even where everyone is talking around me.

Oh what good concentration you have when you're reading. Me, I can't concentrate when there are people around me and its irritating when they talk you. I also can't concentrate reading when I hear sounds such as TVs and music. If I like to read I like it to be quiet. Sometimes I just stay lock up in my room if I want to finish reading. Ciao!

HI iskayz thanks for bringing this up, yes i agree with you im fun of reading and i love to read aloud. In our training in language subjects we adviced to read it aloud coz in this way, we can easily determined the correct pronounciation of the word in fact we need to record our voice so we exactly utter perfectly how to stress the word. At home , i used to read aloud despite that im disturbing other people. I actually speak english at home though my family is not used to it since we are talking the native language which is tagalog. Dont worry guys your not alone with this kind of hobbies . I just want to be a good english speaker someday so i do everything in order to be perfect. my regards to mylotters

it depends, If i want to understand quickly what i read, i like to read out laud but usually i like to read silently for i dont want to disturb others. If i dont understand what i read i just re read it again to get the message of it. I dont have dictionary with me when i am reading but i just take note some words that i dont understand. I like reading and infact i read the whole newspaper everyday. i think it is my habit already. I have also a magazine subscription every month and i also collect self help book too.

Hi, iskayz. Yes, reading is a very good habit. I agree with all the positive benefits you list of reading. I read silently to myself unless I am reading something difficult. Sometimes I read things aloud to make them make a little more sense to me. Also, I enjoy words and how they sound strung together, so sometimes I will read something aloud just to hear how it sounds. I take notes while I read too. I write in margins of my books and I write in a journal that I always have with me when I read. I like to read aloud.... I used to be an elementary school teacher and read aloud everyday to my kids. But to myself, I mostly read silently.

I read silently. With that, I can really relax my mind and understand what I read. But if I find it difficult to understand, I kept reading it several times. I think reading silently is the best way especially when you are with some other people that does not want to be disturb

I love to read and i read silently. Adults actually should read silently. I am a fast reader and I am glad even if I do, I still comprehend what I read. you can practice reading silenty, you just have to concentrate and make sure you will have a quiet place to read.

I always read books in my heart, I don't like read it loudly because I think it is not good to understand and remember. And I also have a discovery that when I can not sleep in night,i can't read story books, it makes me activity, so that I can't sleep all night unless I read out all of that book.
