GUI automation help

I am planning to start the automation in Windows OS. Hope i can start with vbscript. I am not getting any clue to how to start with. The problem is how to get a reference of other application. Anybody is having any idea about this..

Its strange for me.. I know automating applications but ot os.Its intersting..Using which tool u want to automate.

I am not sure with the tool. If i am starting with any tool there may be some dependency like some supporting files to be present. But i am planning with the pure scripting only so that it can be run in any machine :)
