Well, this is my 3rd thanks giving time here because in my country we don't have specific time to have thanksgiving. When I was yet there, I often heard about thanks giving holidays in America and also see it in movies that people have turkey for thanksgiving. I just wonder why they choose turkey? why not other animal? thanksgiving is always attached to turkey.. thanksgiving turkey.
Are you going to have one this thanksgiving? just curious if you do and what does it mean?

my family is small so we usually have something fun, like tacos! That way we set out all the condiments and everyone gets to decorate their own!

No, because my family is so small, a big huge turkey is too much. Everyone but my mom and husband has a left-over phobia, so saving the rest for later really isn't an option... Anyways, turkey makes you sleepy... on xgiving, I usually want to play games, like cards, and baulderdash, so I want to stay awake :)

I love cooking a big dinner on Thanksgiving and Christmas even if it is only Hubby and I. I do the whole turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoe casserole, veggies, pumpkin pie and, Hubby's favorite, coconut cream pie. I also go over to my Mom's and see all the family and visit so it's a great time for all of us siblings to get together.

I plan to tear that bird apart with my bare hands, after he's cooked of course. There is a history behind the turkey for Thanksgiving. I won't give you a history lesson but you should look it up, its quite interesting. We do have other meat at Thanksgiving, ham and brisket.

Turkey is just a tradition for like a hundred years now. Yes, we will be having turkey. The in-laws are bringing it... People eat turkey and ham as far as I know. It's not really a tradition for me either as in Germany it's not celebrated. I'm more amazed that they cook such a big bird and then have leftovers, leftovers, leftovers, leftovers, ....

I also have the same question as you bebs. Why only turkey for thanksgiving. May be its just tradition and some people just follow the tradition without asking any question.

We do not have thanksgiving where I am from the UK, I never really know what thanksgiving is all about so maybe I will learn something here too. We just celebrate christmas and we have a big special dinner on christmas day but we do not have turkey, I cannot stand it I think it is a horrible meat.

Thanksgiving is an old Protestant celebration where the pioneering fathers gave thanks for their blessings in the new land, or so I believe.
I'm not an American. Im from Trinidad, in the Caribbean, where we eat turkey traditionally at Christmastime.
So I think this is it and I guess, when it all began in the 17 hundreds there must have been lots of turkeys around.
Trinidad imports a lot of turkeys from America at Christmas because we don't grow much here.
Hope you enjoy it.
I love the turkey legs.
Here those are served as a separate dish in some eating places and they make a meal all by themselves.

You know what, I've never thought about why we always have turkey on Thanksgiving, thats the only time we have it, is once a year, on Christmas we usually have ham..lol. I don't know why, this year we're going to my sisters and she is married into a Mexican family and whenever we go to her house we always have mexican food, so I don't know if we'll be having turkey or not this year...haha. It makes no difference to me, I like mexican food thats my favorite, and it will be something different than having turkey.

Unfortunately, we have no specific day of thanksgiving here in the Philippines and Turkey is not our favorite bird to eat. I neve tasted turkey we always have chicken. We cook chicken in different ways. We can have friend chicken, baked chicken, adobo chicken, chicken soup, or with pancit.. but we never have turkey when we have parties here. Well, I wish I could taste turkey LOL.. they said it tastes good.. It's a big bird..

WE have a turkey every year on Thanksgiving. It is a tradition. However, not all families have turkey. I know a few of my friends that have pork or duck on Thanksgiving. I love the foods we prepare and Thanksgiving and Christmas and I wait all year for them.

Oh yes we always have a turkey and all of the trimmings! We also have a ham as well. Our family is rather large and Thanksgiving is one of the times when we go all out with the foods and desserts. I do love turkey! It is one of the fowls that the Pilgrams hunted for when they were celebrating with the Indians. Also mentioned was duck and geese. I think that the turkey just sits in our mind more than the duck and the geese due to the fact that turkey originated here in the US and in Mexico.

It is part of the history, When Pilgrims came to the US, they were taught by the native Indians to survive. They wee taught to plant corn, and other food and raised animals.
As a way of saying thank you to the Indians, they had a Thanksgiving Celebration and part of it was Turkey.
So that's why, Tukey is always part of the Thanksgiving Celebation..

I'm not going to have turkey, as I'm not going home. I'm, however, going out to a restaurant on Thanksgiving to treat myself. At Christmas, I will have a traditional turkey dinner, as I'm going to my family's house.

Hi! This will be my second Thanksgiving here in the States and, just like last year, will not have any turkey. In my native country, we don't do this. It takes a long time to cook a turkey (like almost the whole day) and sometimes it does not come out well. I will just wait for anyone to give me some leftovers. Hahaha. I am not very fond of turkey anyway. My sister who lives with me is not so fond of it either, so there's no point in having one.
As for why turkey, I guess this has been an age-old tradition. Happy myLotting!

It is very obvious that turkey is the icon of thanksgiving day there. I think it symoblizes prosperity. But here in the Philippines the people would love seeing lechon (pig) on their table. But I don't eat pork so no way for me to prepare lechon pig but would rather opt for lechon manok. Turkey is very rare here. We used to keep some Turkeys in our backyard but would you believe that I don't even know if I have ever tasted a turkey1 Ha!ha!ha! Those Turkeys we had were from Pampanga (the province of my Mom). So I was so used to seeing so many turkeys lingering around during my childhood days and in fact I was even afraid of them because sometimes they would chase me. But I can't remember if I was ever able to eat its meat during my childhood days. So I have no idea how it tasted.

hahaha I remember that lechon pig that is always present in the table when there is party but I don't eat pork either and I am not enjoying to see that. We are not raising turkeys here but as if we have lots sometimes in our yard. Our house is near the woods ( as most houses here in the country area are like that) group of turkeys sometimes come to our yard,, hahah wild turkeys. I plan to catch one but as soon as I open the door they will all flyaway..hahaha No hope to have turkey on thanksgiving unless we will buy one...but hubby is not eating turkey so, I'll just wait when the neighbors shared theirs. LOL..

Hi EAStanley, I am also eager to hear other people's idea about thanksgiving turkey.
and you know what? I tasted turkey just here in America.. there are turkeys in my country but that is not our usual meat when we have parties. We do have chicken and beef all the time, no turkey. And can say now, that turkey tastes better than chicken.
so, it is a tradition to have turkey on thanksgiving? cool!!
