Are you self-taught in a lot of things?

Are you the sort of a do-it-yourself guy who prefers to study manuals and look for tips online so you can fix things on your own than pay someone else to do it? Do you rely more on books and instructional videos than getting formal instruction?
As for myself, I have been self-taught in a few things. For example, I learned a martial art all on my own and have been practicing for a year now. I am also learning how to play piano mostly on my own. I learned the nuances of meditation by myself. All of these by just reading books and watching videos in the Internet. However, the reason for this is not that I am unwilling to get instruction; I just couldn't afford it.
SO what's your self-teaching story? Cheers!

I moved toItaly and couldn't speak a word except 'ciao' and 'pizza' I learnt quite quickly all by myseld just listening and reading and then learnt to spell by using chat rooms
I am also self-taught on my computer. Once I found out that it's almos impossible to completely mess it up I just battle on and get to where I want to
I also taught myseld to cook by experimenting and now I have my own specialities which friends adore eating here.

If you go to a country and do not know the language, you have to learn it if you want to eat
Well done on Japanese - I think I could not manage that one.

Well I didn't have the money nor the means to formally learn Japanese. I also didn't have the money to go to Japan, which is the best place to learn lol. Books and videos were all I have, as well as my determination.
Happy mylotting!

Experience and practice are the best learning buddies around. Oh, so you taught yourself Italian? Wow, that's nice!
I've learned a bit of Japanese by myself as well although I haven't practiced for awhile now.

I think in some cases i am self-taught (especially in the computer field) but i also think that sometimes is necessary to use some tips (if not the manual) to help me understand better what this is about. I think that in life there are things that you should learn on your own (sometimes from your mistakes) - yes, i am talking in general.

I think there are some things that we cannot learn by ourselves because it takes time or it's risky to learn by your own.
Mistakes are the best teachers in life, or shall I say experience.
Happy mylotting, my friend, and thanks for responding.

like you,i'm also self-taught in some things.i taught myself to play the guitar and other instruments.i think being this way (self-taught) makes me learn things better than having to read books and other things.and also,if you learn it by yourself, those things are not that easily forgotten as they are better stored in the brain.

being self-taught gives us the advantage of devoting some time to a certain concept or lesson so that we could understand it better. and, yes, it's easier to process information that way.
Thanks for responding!
