How do you get people to comment at your blog

Having a blog where nobody come and visit is not really nice. Having a blog where people come and visit is really cool. However, the best is when people come and leave comments at our posts. That is the whole idea about blogging and differentiate it from being just another diary for ourself to read...
I have been searching for ways to get people to comment or at least give them a reason to comment. I have found a few ways to reward people who came and commented on my posts and out of that many ways, I have chosen one.
The one that I have chosen was to reward the first person that commented on my latest post. The reward that I gave is a FREE 125 x 125 advertisement spot on my blog and the banner of the first commenter would be displayed there until the next post is posted to my blog.
So far it has been getting great feedback from my readers although one or two came back and said it is pointless as the visitors would only comment if they are the first one.
There is some truth in that but looking at a different view, at least now more would make it a point to come and see whether the first commenter position is still available or not.
With that, I am already getting more comments and more visitors at the same time. What do you think? Do you have a better idea. Hope that you can share it with me.
My blog links is in my profile if you want to see how it is implemented. The spot is just below the shoutbox.
Cheers!

This is how I get comment in my blog - I visit similar blogs and comment on their blogs. So get comments in return.

I think you should give a clear idea on what your blog is all about Then be a little bit provocative. It does not mean you should be argumentative or try to force your views on others. Nobody has visited my blogs yet but it is my fault for not promoting them.

Hi shaxx! You are certainly doing the right thing bro. I think getting traffic to our blog is important but getting them to comment is another ball game altogether. Your post must be interesting too. Well, the comments you are getting is tremendous because your content is wonderful to read and comment. What i do is to give free software, report or e book every fortnight.

Not a bad I idea for getting some more comments . You can further improve your idea by not giving the free spot to the first person who comments but instead give it to the one that makes the best comment and keep this criteria open until you make another post

I know the feeling, I rarely get any comments on my blog unless I bug my friends to read my blog, or if I offer something to people in return, which i thought wasn't really fair.
Now, I go and read blogs of others and leave as many comments as I can, and I hope they come by mine and do the same, if they don't then that's okay, because at least I'm getting my name out there so people can come and at least read my blog
