My family loved driving out to the Grand Canyon. We actually did that on a lot less money than going to Walt Disney. We did like Disney World though. My family also enjoyed Washington, DC and the Outer Banks of NC. One terrific trip was to split a week by spending a few days in Charleston, SC before heading to Myrtle Beach. On another trip we got a membership to our local zoo and then drove to other zoos within our reach that reciprocated for free. It was cool!
What ages are your kids? If you can share more about that and what they like to do I'd love to talk about vacations! We've been a lot of different places. The fun began when the kids were relatively small. They are in college now and have been bitten by their own traveling bugs.

What about a historically significant place? New England States offer a lot there. The Grand Canyon, Mountains, Lakes, Ocean, Redwood Forest. Depends on kids ages, your budget and location. Pick a state and you can get a visitor guide (free) that will give you lots of info on that State.

I am not a big fan of Disney. Been there, done that many times. My family loves the beach, so we love to go to Daytona Beach, Florida and Ocean City, Maryland. There are tons of places to go on vacation in the US. It all depends on your interests. If you like history, Williamsburg, Virginia is a nice place to go. Or even Washington, DC.
What about the Grand Canyon?
