Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship

I live in Georgia so I am always interested in what is going on with our politics. Do you think this sound crazy?
A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship.
"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."
Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.
"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."
Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado about building a new civil service corps. Among other things, he called for expanding the nation's foreign service and doubling the size of the Peace Corps "to renew our diplomacy."
"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."
Broun said he also believes Obama likely will move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national police force.

Rep. Broun is not so far off base as many might claim. One only need look at Obama's constitutional ideology or lack-there-of to realize this. Sadly, most don't. while I don't fear an open dictatorship. I do fear a dangerous transformation of ideology. And what's more, I fear this ideology is being accepted blindly because masses are simply not willing to open their eyes and see what is sneaking up on us. By Obama's definition, I would be a terrorist. Because I assert my state's rights and the right to defend those under 2nd amendment as a last but still available resort, I am a terrorist as are others who assert constitutional freedoms of the republic. And with Obama's proposal of a "national security force" it creates am environment for violence in this country like we have not seen since the civil war.
A NATIONAL CIVILIAN SECURITY FORCE??!! I almost spit my coffe out and choked when I read his proposal for the first time a while back. Um....Senetor, excuse me President elect Obama....we already have such a force, it is already described in the constitution's second amendment and in each state constitution, very clearly. What Obama is praposing would wind up being a direct oposition to this existing entity as we can be sure it will be defending his agenda and not the constitution, this in itself makes his proposal unconstitutional and will wind up enraging the existing believers in liberty and the republic.

Thank you for an excellent response as I do not agree with everything Rep. Broun says but as you say he is not far off base. It is a very scary scenario.

I may be showing my ignorance here, but isn't the National Guard the National Civilian Security Force? I think we need to let them stay at home and do it. I do not think we need a force beyond that.

the national guard USED to be. However, since it was changed so that it could come under federal control it no longer fits the defintition I used. though the National guard is for the most part, under the direct command of the State's governors, it can be called up under federal authority. In federal capacity, it can not be used on united States soil, such is forbidden by law of Posse Comitatus as is any federal military.
I am refering to the civilian unorganized militia. It is force who's duty is to defend the state. In some states, there are even organized militia's catagorized as a STATE guard in addition to unorganized militias.

obama won fair and square it is time for the republicans to stop whining and spreading vicious lies meant to insight fear and hatred into people and just get over it.
What American needs is a united country not a divided one and any political candidate republican or democrat their duty is to make this happen,
McCain gave a wonderful speech, he was the one that could have been a sore loser but he wasn't he was a man of integrity and pledged his support to obama now it is time for everyone to do the same.

"Interesting how Obama supporters show so little concern for their constitutional rights"
even more interesting how these are the SAME people who were screaming about their constitutional rights when Bush was busy circumventing them

I am not a republican and I'm not whining. Neither is the represenative,though a republican, whining. Showing concern for constitutional adherence is far from whining. If you believe it to be, then you are probably too far in to the cult of personality borne of in comming administration to realize what is at stake. Believe what you will, it is apparent no one is going to change that for you.

I wonder if the congressman believes that the American people are so complacent that that this could happen? I do not know that we would be duped that way, to be taken in, like Nazi Germany. On the other hand I do see us falling into the ancient Roman attitude that the government should provide us with 'bread and games'. We are soft and squishy, and do not feel like we should ever have to dig ourselves back out of the holes we have dug, at least not corporately. I do not see the everyday people getting much of a bailout.He may be right, though. If Obama says that this is necessary to build us up financially, people might be fooled and sit still for it.

Gery Plead read these interesting comparisons as to how the Germans were duped and how we could also be duped:
The good way to define socialism explicitly is by comparing the acts and traits of Hitler-the socialist- with that of Obama as follows:
1] Obama is an opportunist like Hitler who used the dire financial straits of Germany and the Jews as scapegoats. Obama is also using the financial straits of USA and the Republican as scapegoats;
2] Obama lies to hide the truth and so did Hitler. Obama lies that he is a Christian, but Obama speaks like a Muslim does and Hitler lied that he was a German Catholic when he was really a Jew whose father was kicked out of Jewry because of wedlock;
3] Obama has many liars lying to hide the truth for him before and during the election and so did Hitler;
4] Obama’s mother was a White American and Hitler was a Jew of German mother;
5] Obama follows Hitler’s idea building up ACORN discreetly like Hitler built HITLER YOUTH which was used to train and built up SA and SS Nazi army;
6] Obama is using ACORN [which is helping schooling youth] to help him to win election and Hitler used the Hitler Youth and SS troop to win the election;
7] Obama claims to be a Christian, BUT HE WOULD SPEAK TO DOUBT THE WORD OF GOD LIKE A MUSLIM WOULD and Hitler claimed to be German Catholic when he was a Jew, a race which he hid successfully from the German people;
8] Obama promises spreading wealth to the poor, jobs and good economy and Hitler had the same thinking ONLY HE, ALONE, MONOPOLIZED THE ECONOMY. WOULD OBAMA DO THE SAME?

Do you think the people of germany saw it comming either? DO you realize how much has already quietly happened while we have been bickering about wardrobes, birth certificates and plumbers? This is exactly how it works.tiny increments you don't notice until it's too late. there are already unprecidented things taking shape and look at how litteraly 10's of millions are falling right in line with it quite voluntarily.

I don't understand you Obama supporters! I can understand if you understand his beliefs and agree with them. But when we QUOTE Barack Obama directly, in context, you say we are whining and MAKING THINGS UP!!!! That is what I can't understand. Are y'all all so in Obama's pocket that you refuse to even watch his speeches, read his books, or in any way open your eyes to see what he is saying? I know all of you cannot be so stupid that you don't understand it, so I can only assume you just choose not to follow the links, not to listen to the man in his own words....
Barack Obama has made it CLEAR that he believes the Constitution is a "living" document, that should be and can be changed to fit "needs".
He's not alone -- many liberals want to do that.
Once we allow changes -- rather, interpretations -- from judges that he has made clear should be and will be appointed based on their ability to understand and empathize with the underprivileged (who gets to define who they are) rather than on their belief that they are not to legislate from the bench, pretty soon we don't have our Constitution anymore. It's already losing its value to so many people who don't understand.

BTW I am so glad I no longer live in the UK with all the pandering that is going on with the Muslims. Maybe you should look at your own shadows before worrying about ours. I am old enough to remember living in Scotland when Hitler was our enemy.

Urban, I can see how, living where you do, you would see this as jumping at shadows. We live under a very different ideology than your nation does. Things that even the U.K. government does routinely are things that here would be considered out right screaming blasphemy in this country. .

I did not read the article in question, but it is typical "sour grapes" rhetoric coming from a far right, do anything to discredit, holier than thou republican who has seen the last days of an administration that has helped to line his pockets over the last 8 years. In fact we've finally ridded ourselves of a president, who has inflicted the most damage to personal freedoms ever seen in this country, under the guise of NATIONAL SECURITY and the PATRIOT ACT. We can fervently hope that among Obamas first tasks will be to undo some of these ridiculous and paranoid edicts that this president has installed! Fear not! Democracy is once again at hand!

He had better adhere to those promises. there is a very large growing number of angry and disgusted citizens out there.

You should know however, I find Obama's constitutional ideology equaly if not more frightening than even Bush's. Obama is in a wait and see trial basis. If some of the winds of things I hear about and have read come to pass with him, you can be sure this will be a tipping point for this country and a number of elements in it that are fed up with our constitution and our states being raped.

I appreciate the comment from xfahctor, I can only say "Be Patient". This is the president-elect, he hasn't even taken the oath of office yet. He is trying to get the ball rolling as soon as possible, if you read or listen to the news, you are seeing an unprecedented scene as to the handling of the transition. Why? because the president administration has (in my humble opinion) made a mess of our own country. As well as it's standing in the world's eyes. This isn't a quick fix, it took 8 years to tear it down, it will probably take longer to re-build. But that's what we have to face, so let's at least give the MAN a chance to do some good. How long? I would venture at least 2 to 3 years. We should however see some improvements before that. The worst thing the american people to do at this point in time is to be the impatient spoiled little brats that much of the world consider us to be. Let us show them how strong and resilient we are by standing by the incoming president.

Broun says no apology for Obama label
By Julia Malone
Thursday, November 13, 2008
Washington —- Georgia Congressman Paul Broun Wednesday stood by warnings that President-elect Barack Obama might set up a Gestapo-like civilian security force.
One day after the Athens Republican told a radio talk show that he regretted calling Obama a “Marxist,” a spokeswoman for the Athens congressman said, “We have not issued any official apology” for comparing Obama’s proposals to the tactics of Hitler and the Soviet Union.
“What he said in the [radio] interview does not negate what he really feels —- that he has questions and concerns regarding some of the statements Obama has made,” said the spokeswoman, Jessica Morris.
She said Broun was sticking by a written statement issued Tuesday criticizing Obama for having “socialist views” and raising ominous concerns about a campaign proposal to build “a civilian national security force” to assist the military.
“History shows that ‘civilian national security forces’ bode ill for citizens,” Broun said in the statement.
The flap has been watched with particular interest inside the State Department, which already is building a civilian corps similar to the one Obama described in a campaign speech.
The Civilian Response Corps, as it is called, was launched two years ago by the Bush administration, after a bipartisan vote by Congress and the urging of Republicans, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“I think the attention to this issue is very important,” said John E. Herbst, the former ambassador to Ukraine who is leading the project.
The civilian corps is now recruiting engineers, law enforcement personnel, health officers, city administrators and other specialists who could be sent overseas to help re-establish local governmental controls after a crisis.
“The impetus was some of the problems we encountered in Afghanistan and Iraq on the civilian side,” Herbst said. “Our military performed brilliantly,” he said, adding that the troops needed the skills and assistance of civilians to help re-establish order.
For that purpose, he said the corps would have 250 full-time federal employees and eventually train 2,000 more as “standby” corps members from eight federal agencies. Another 2,000 would be designated as reserve members, available to be called up for up to one year.
So far, Congress has voted $55 million to begin testing the idea, which eventually would be budgeted at just under $250 million, if supported by the new administration.
Herbst said it would be “presumptuous” to say what the new president will want and declined to comment on Broun’s remarks.
But he offered of the civilian corps, “I believe it would save us lives and money in the long run.”

Do you remeber New Deal during the Depression, the setting up of organisations that took unemployed youths to the Dust Bowl to plant trees - the Hitler Youth in other words. Doesn't America already have militiamen patrolling the Mexican border. In the UK we have the TA, the Territorial Army, or Reservists - they are now dying in record numbers in Afghanistan.
When a country is engaged in war, people do not sign up, hence the military shrinks. I don't think that Obamas ideas along this line are anything new, nor anything to be over-concerned about.
Marx and Engels predicted that 'Capitalism would erode society' and across the world governments are talking about the loss of community spirit. Obama is not a Marxist, trust me, I'm a Socialist. I have often said that an American election is tantamount to a choice between Hitler or Franco, because in general American politics is so far right of centre. I don't even feel that Obama has attained middle of the road yet, never mind toppling over to the left hand side of equation.
Let's not bring back the McCarthyism of the 50s, or the Salem witchtrials just yet.
I'd wait until he gets into power, and then judge him by his actions not the rhetoric.
America may have had ladies in the running for power, and elected a black president, but I still think the country is a long, long way from getting anywhere near Marxism. Unfortunately, though that's just my view:)

I read the same article and I have said all along that Obama is a liberal socialist and that is not a good combination. Add to that the fact that he is inexperienced and unable to maintain a definite opinion on anything and we have a combination that spells disaster for our country. I can see a lot of problems coming and I hope the American people are ready for them.

Well it could happen. With a democratic controlled congress you would not really hear much about it before it passed. Don't count on the major media to bring it up. IT would just get rubber stamped and pushed through. Look at the partriot act. NO one I know thought that was a good idea. But look at the name they put on it. It makes it look like if you did not support it than are not a good American.
We as a country did sit back as President Bush walked all over our rights. Homeland Security scares me more than the terrorist. We did nothing to stop him. Why would it be any different with Obama. People will grumble and complain but that will be about it and Washington knows it.
