Rennie Scicluna, the dog lover who was imprisoned for not paying fines he got for using an abandoned building as a sanctuary for stray dogs, was released after the public donated generously to raise the sum in less than four days. http://www.maltastar.com/pages/msrv/msfullart.asp?an=25301 I really find this case as shameful for the maltese courts to put such a kind man in prison.

It is wonderful that this man could look out for these stray animals. It is so sad that the neighbours and authorities are so cold and uncaring. I hope that other animals right groups can be assistance to him worldwide. We need to show compassion even if it is to animals.

Courts rarely dispense justice, I've found. Why doesn't the Maltese public works do something about the strays? They could spay and neuter them and find them homes, then people like that good man wouldn't have to go to jail for acting compassionately.

I agree it is shameful, the law is all about money, money, money, they don't care the good that people do at all.

IN terms of the law, the man is in the wrong, because he used an abandon building.. ANd that he is fined, it means that it's a government or private property, and he is trespassing.. Thus, the fine is justified too.. Also, stray dogs are dangerous for they might carry rabbies, and so he should actually bring those dogs to proper animal shelters where they get proper care..

Although I do think it is horrible, did this man know of the consequinces of doing his actions and do them anyway, because if he did, then he does not deserve a lot of support if he knew what he was doing was unlawful.

I agree, It is shameful for them to put somoene like him in jail for doing what he was doing in caring for the animals. I am glad that the community/public could raise the funds for him so he could be released. It is a shame though that they are still more fines that have to be paid and also it will be hard to find adequate shelter for the animals that he has been caring for. I wonder who cared for the animals while he was in jail?

I don't know the story, but sometimes the letter of the law has tobe followed, even though it is not the most popular, or most humane. I'm happy, in this case sanity has won, and the man is free. Is he going back to using tha abandoned building, or will the dogs be back on the streets?

disgusting that they will put people like him in prison when all these child abuser, murderers, rapist & people like that are running free. of course everybody can't just take any building for their use but it's a shame whoever owned the building didn't donate it to him.

Hi ronaldinu, This makes me sick, its just all about money these days, but if someone was ill treating the dogs, I don't think he will be put in prison, it makes me sick. Tamara

Yeah I know what you mean. It's an abandoned building anyways. At least the man was kind enough to take care of stray dogs. Some people can be really greedy and insensitive.
