Are you a heavy sleeper or a light sleeper?

I'm definitely a light sleeper. I get disturbed by the slightest noise, from voices from another room, to our neighbor's dog's whining. When I'm asleep and somebody switches the light on, I also get disturbed. It's really annoying, and I wish I could be a heavy sleeper like my sister. I must say though, that being a light sleeper does have some good points. Once there was a really huge storm that hit our city and the rain was really beating down hard. We had all the windows in our room closed and locked, but around the middle of the night, the water started coming in. I was already awakened by the sound of the rain and when I felt the water coming in I got up and told my mom right away. We moved to our parent's room (well, at least I did. My dad had to carry my sister), and the next morning, my sister was surprised to find herself there. She was such a heavy sleeper that she had slept through everything, and she had absolutely no idea what happened the night before!
What about you? Are you a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper?

It's the body clock working... I have the same problem too... my sister sleeps through her alarm and I'm the one awakened by it and then the next day and the next I wake up at the same time without the alarm!

this seems to happen a lot to those who become parents. i think there is a big majority of responders on here that said the same thing. i don't have children, but i can see with my mom, she's the same. just a little squeak from one of us kids and she'd be awake in a second!

I'm actually a light sleeper. Unlike my brothers, you could surely wake me up just by calling my name or a slight tap on my feet or shoulder or whatever, as long as its a tap and enough for me to feel i will surely be get up. But there are times specially if I have a rush article or a research to finish, i wont sleep not unless im half or almost finish. during these time I would be sleeping for almost half a day. Specially when your comfortable and has nothing to worry about for the next day.
I think people who are a light sleeper are those who are always busy that even at sleep they tend to think about his or her schedule for the next day, or what gonna happen if.. (the what if's) or "i have an early meeting tommorow" your anxious about it that you tend to light sleep.. well im not about these reason, its just that that what thought coz Im also a light sleeper..

I used to be a heavy sleeper, and a fast one at that. I would just lie on the bed, talking to my roomates and the next thing I know its already morning. for the past 2months though I find myself having trouble sleeping and maintaining my sleep. At night, I'd lie down, toss and turn for about two hours, sleep lightly, wake up after 2 or 3 hours to our dogs' barking, whimpering, whining, howling (around 3-4am!), make them shut up, TRY to go back to sleep, toss and turn for another hour, and sleep again for another 3 hours. In the morning when I get up, I'd be having this mild headache and the feeling that I didn't get any sleep at all! Ugh! Last week I even found out that even if our dogs weren't making any sound, that the night was very still I'd still wake up after sleeping for just a couple of hours. I can't drink any sleeping pills coz I'm pregnant right now. That's what makes me really worried, because if I don't get much sleep, my baby might have eyebags when she comes out as well!

Could it be caused by your pregnancy? Whatever the case, I agree that you need to keep healthy during your pregnancy and sleeping is very important.... maybe you can ask your doctor about it, and he/she may be able to suggest something to help you sleep. Hope you'll be having sweet dreams soon! :)

I think this is due to my pregnancy too. I've read in a mom's book somewhere that insomnia can sometimes occur at any time while pregnant, so maybe that is the reason. Last night was the first night in weeks that I have slept more soundly, despite having to get up twice for the bathroom. Thanks for welcoming me here by the way. I like the fact that not only i get to earn something by participating on topics that interest me, I get to meet different people as well and learn new stuff as I go along the site. Happy myLotting! =)

I am also a light sleeper. I can't sleep if there is even a little bit of light in my room or sound. I cant even sleep because of clock ticking or water dripping. Its a struggle for me everytime to sleep.

I have that problem too, especially on night when I am having insomnia, it would seem like the ticking of the clock is sooo loud. And also the dripping, it drives me crazy, so I always check for dripping before going to bed. The light too, my sister likes to read before bed so I would always have to wait until she falls asleep before I can sleep.

i'm a light sleeper like you too. i get waked up by sound or light. it's a good thing cause i'll be able to wake up and close the windows when it rains. i'll also wake up if someone tries to come into my room. you'll never know if someone decides to break into your home.
and like you, i have a sister who is a very heavy sleeper. i think the house can burn down before she wakes up. we have tried waking her up to no avail.

Haha, I think it makes a good pair though, so that if something happens, the light sleeper can rouse the heavy sleeper.

I find it difficult to get to sleep, if there is too much noise but when I am asleep I'm definitely a heavy sleeper. I've slept through thunder storms and unfortunately alarm clocks too many times. I don't know if I'd awaken if there was an emergency I hope I would but hopefully it'll never happen.

Hahah my sister sleeps through alarms too, so what happens is that she sets it, and then I wake up to the alarm and I poke her until she gets up. I hate it when she won't wake up because her alarm has cost me some sleeping time and since I won't be able to get back to sleep anymore, I wake her up so that the effort won't get wasted!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. The capital Z's mean I'm a heavy sleeper. I can sleep through most anything unless there is an unfamilar noise and then my ear hairs start to rustle and that wakes me up. I've slept through a few thunderstorms because the rain, even though its beating down, is still quite peaceful. Nothing happens while it raining, that's probably why your sister snoozed like she did.

Actually the funny thing there is that she didn't even feel it when my dad picked her up and moved her to their room. She just slept through everything!

I'm a very light sleeper. When I'm really tired then I can sleep heavily but I wake up pretty easily most of the time. Bright lights, loud noise, or any movement on the bed will wake me up, which is why I hate it when my neighbors are out partying until the early hours of morning. It just keeps me up!!! In a way though I find it a bit helpful too because I know that I won't die when there's a quake or fire when I sleep. I feel more secure knowing that I can wake up right away.

I'm an extremely light sleeper the slightest noise will wake me, thats why I prefer to shut my TV and lights off when I sleep but lately Iv had to keep the TV and the light in my bed room on because of my pet cat he sleeps better with them on, and if I cut them off he will not let me sleep and he will stay awake longer destroying things in my bed room and meowing really loud so, as a result I have to change my usual bed time routine to suit my cat and now I cant sleep much at all I made a topic about pets keeping you awake a while ago but unfortunately I couldn't find any advice that would work on my cat. but oh well I will just have to get use to only getting 3 hours of sleep a day.

I'm a heavy sleeper. But before I fall asleep, I am very easy to awake. When I fall aleep, I dislike to be bothered by any noises, especially a snorer. Snorer is really annoyed.

i'm a light sleeper too. I will get annoying by lights, sound from outside or tv and will hard to sleep. When i went to bed, i must switch off all the light and tv in order for me to have a deep sleep with a sweet dream. There once i went to bed, my boyfriend came to my house stay one night, oh my god, i start to know that he got a snoring habit. His snorring is just like a thunder stomp! His outlook, attitude, character were all perfect, he is a nice and caring guy to me but since that night, i felt something................ That night, i recorded his scaring snore sound and the following day i let him know, he don't even know that he got this problem. Haha..

Maybe he's just stressed out that's why he snores LOL, but there are ways that might help him stop snoring.

I used to be a heavier sleeper till I had kids. Now my body is trained to jump awake as soon as I hear something because I'm thinking that the kids need me. I still have my nights where I sleep pretty heavy though because I'm exhausted. We live by train tracks and on the main road through town so I've adjusted to being able to sleep through that noise.

My mom is like that. When I go into their room to say, get toothpaste from their bathroom, she would wake up and be like "What? What? Is something wrong?"

Hello mymelodake,
I am a heavy sleeper. Once I'm sleep, I don't get easily disturbed by light noises or voices from other room. My wife is a light sleeper, she wakes easily if she hear noises and banging. I think mom are light sleeper because of their children, they have a protective instinct that propel them to wake up when noises or other disturbance occurs. For me, it seems I don't have that defenses because I sleep soundly. I don't know if I can be learn to be a light sleeper.
Regards.

I am a very light sleeper any little sound or beam of light will wake me up. My husband snores which keeps me up all night. The streetlight outside shines in the bedroom window my son breathes loud when he is sleeping all these things keep me awake all night long. I usually don't get much sleep.

I'm a very light sleeper. I can wake up to just about anything. I fall asleep wit my tv on but have the volume down really low. And if someone opens my door in the night or makes noises I jump bc it wakes me up...I can feel someone when their rubbin on me etc...It sucks being a light sleeper because then its hard to sleep when u can hear everything! But it doesnt bother me much anymore now that I'm older but as long as I can sleep I don't care.

Well you certainly have good instincts! I think I'm a light sleeper - I always wake up when something sounded weird outside. But for some reason I don't wake up when my phone rings for a text message or for a call - I think it has to be "real" - like something that is tangible and within my area and not some mechanical sound.
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Well! Actually I am a heavy sleeper. When I sleep people say that I talk a lot in the sleep, although I cannot remember it. Once I was sleeping on terrace with my parents & it started raining. Everbody got up as the rain fell on them, but I had to awakened several times as I was fast asleep. But, if my sleep is broken then I am not able to sleep faster.

Like you, I also have a problem going back to sleep when I get disturbed. Sometimes, I stay up for hours waiting to fall back to sleep.
