Braces? Have you gone through this with a child or children?

Both of my boys had their consultations with the ortodontist yesterday and While I knew my oldest son (who is 11) was ready for braces I didn't really think the 8 year would be in that area just yet. Well, they both are and the dentist bill for both is almost 9,000- what in the world. And for the youngest child this is just phase 1 which means there is still more to come. Am I crazy for having doubts about putting braces on my 8 year- knowing that he will have to go through it again (at least once more- maybe twice)?
Please offer some advice to a very wary mother. Thanks

I hate braces. I got stuck with them for 2 years (i know many people that far exceed that time period). It was painful, and just plain irritating. I wanted to get them because i had seriously crooked teeth, but big glasses, braces, and top that off with not fitting in with anyone... made school tormenting for me.
I got them at the age of 13 or 14... but you know what...? It is better to get them younger to get it done younger as to not deal with it later on as a 16 year old. 8 i think is too young because most of the baby teeth are still there. That is why most orthodontists wont do braces for kids that still have a large number of baby teeth.
Wait till he is at least 11... that way most of his baby teeth should be out... i was weird at 12 i still had baby teeth (around 4 or 5). 3 were back teeth, 2 were near the sides... they waited a while before they started work on my teeth so they know what they were going to do...
Do you really want to put your kid through it THREE TIMES??? It hurts the most when they put the back brackets that hold the wires, and when they remove it. Tightening them is uncomfortable at worst. The brackets themselves are glued on with a special glue so they don't hurt at all.
What makes the experience bad is putting them in, and tightening. Kids can be cruel. So you want your youngest to go through it not once.. not twice but perhaps 3 times? I would hate my mother lol...
Im not a parent but i went through it. It is hard enough going through it once. Trust me.

It isn't that I want to put him through 3 times, as a parent I don't want to put him through once (I would take all the pain if I could, but I cna't). The dentist said that the way his teeth are coming in now that if we don't make room for those that haven't erputed yet- then they can actually take to long and damage the permanent teeth that are developing. So while I don't want him to hurt or be teased- I do want him to be healthy and this is the second doctor and they both have said the same thing. So that is why I asked here.
As for my 11 year old- his braces will be on for 30 months (that is the plan at the start of the treatment (goodness knows I hope it doesn't take longer than that) but if it is the 30 months- they will be off before highschool- which was a big deal for my son. Does that make sense?
Thanks for responding.

Ahh i see... so he has a bad case of crowding it seems... im sorry to hear that... as i said it hurts the most (not like pulling out a tooth but hurts) when putting on the brackets that hold the wires.. it is like a circle with hollow circles that are on the outside of the tooth for the wire to be strung through. Other than that the whole thing is rather painless.
Well i guess you have no choice then. But try to lessen his anxiety, he will most likely ask kids at school how braces are put on... kids scared the skin off me telling me each one gets drilled on by a huge tool and blood everywhere =P Im terrified of blood =P to say the least it took me a while to surrender and sit in the chair...
I wish him a easy time with the braces... me it hurt a lot because i had two teeth -top front - that were well above the gum line, coming out at a sharp angle, and were starting to pierce the inside of my upper lip. So they had to apply rubber bands and what not to "pull" them down.. can you say ouch?
I hope his braces wont be anything that complex..
