Now It's Here and Now It's Gone...

My memory is going down the drain. My long term-memory is still good…I can remember just about everything even from when I was young…although there are several years I blocked out b/c I couldn’t believe I was that terrible.
It’s short-term memory that is kicking my butt. Picture this…I’m about to get in the shower when I think of a great topic for a discussion, I figure I’ll write it down after my shower b/c I’m not running around naked looking for a paper and pen , then I get in the shower and keep repeating the topic so I don’t forget it, it becomes a little chant…then I get out still repeating it, get dressed, get to my desk, pick up the pen…AND IT’S GONE!! No sign of it, no clue what it was, it’s like it was never there. I start mumbling under my breath (you don’t want to know what I’m saying) and trying to remember and I could be trying to remember my combination lock numbers from the sixth grade for all the good it’s doing It’s gone forever.
This happens ALL THE TIME. I feel like if I don’t write it down right then and there it’ll disappear on me. Does this ever happen to you? How do you remember it or keep from forgetting it? This isn’t a sign that I’m losing it, is it?

I have that same problem. I have been told taking my vitamins and eating healthy would help in that. I was also told to take 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of red apple cider vinegar 3 times a day would help with my memory as well. My grandfather used to take it like clockwork and it helped him alot. It is nasty but well worth the results. It helps more then your memory also. As you can tell I haven't been listening to the advice lately so it hasn't helped me any lately. I do that all the time think of a topic mostly when I am laying down ready to go to sleep I know I should keep a note pad handy I would have to hang it on the wall since my bed is against the wall.

I think that it happens to many people, I know that it happens to me although I think for me it is because I do not need to remember things. When I was at school I had what they called a photographic memory, I only needed to look at things once to remember them. When I left school and no longer needed to be able to do it I lost it and so started my brains spiral into laziness!

I would have had to have run all over the house naked looking for a pen and paper, because that is the only way that I can remember, I do it at the specific time that I think of it or it is gone forever.. It is awful when you are trying to remember something and it will not come to you for any reason.. I do know the feeling and I do sympathize.
I am not sure about posting links to another website but this is a great one for seniors, it almost makes it worthwhile to be getting old.. Check it out and enjoy..

Wasn't sure if you were old enough to see some of the jokes on this site or not but view it at your own risk.. By the time you are our age, you have seen it all anyway, so none of this comes as a surprise for the youthfully challenged..

You're not losing it, it happens to me all the time. I keep paper and pens all over my house so I can write stuff down. I blame it on being a mom. I never forgot things before my 3rd trimester of my first pregnancy. It only got worse from then on. I have 2 kids now and I'm dumber and more forgetful then ever.

Yeah, I'd have to say you are losing it.
Nothing like that ever happens to me... my memory is just as good as it ever was.
Now if only people would leave things where I put them...

I'm very sorry to hear that. i have that problem sometimes too. I have to write me a list so it can help me remember things. I don't think you are losing it. You may just be going through a phase.

I do the list thing too...if I don't half the stuff around here doesn't get done. I guess I could start keeping a notepad and pen in each room in case I need to write something down.

join the crowd!
I've done that, but sometimes it will flash back
sometimes if I repeat what I was doing when I had the idea, it will come back
I almost have to repeat the steps tho - annoying!
oh, and I couldn't remember my combination lock until I had repeated it about 20 times, so I had to practice it before we put it on the locker at school....
a good memory has never been my long suit

I had to laugh, Twoey, sorry. "In search of peace within", I can picture you trying to remember that, your mission in life, then forgetting!!
That happens to me all the time. It's just something I have to live with and I always have pen and paper handy in every room in my house!

I used to know what caused all that but since I have gotten old I have forgotten what it was. Have you ever started in another room to do something and by the time you get there you forgot what it was you were going to do? That is a true sign you are getting old. I'm almost 70 and I sure do dread getting old. :-)

I've done that a few times...though not as much as the whole discussion thing. I've also found myself hunting for the phone only to have to hit the locate button and follow the beeps...occasionally I find it in the fridge...no telling why I put it in there

Look from a this side...maybe you ought to forget that one so you could start this one :) Maybe that one wouldnt have answers while this one offers something we all can realate to.
Its not the age...at least not at 40 lol, though I do use that excuse sometimes too (at 34 noone believes me heheh). But it is the stress, everything that we have to remember, we are swaped with informations so there is no wonder we forget things. Dont worry ;)

We must be looking in the mirror at each other. I'm the same way. I write articles and must come up with new topics every day. Sometimes those new topics come to me in the night. I rehearse the topic over and over, planning not to forget it. But I do. If started getting up and putting ideas downs on paper when the thought happens. The only other way I can remember topics for later or for use here on MyLot, is to visualize the topic or associate it with a tangible object. That has helped before.

Several days ago I made my first post since I have been back. It was about this topic. I don't know how old you are, but I can definitely relate to what is happening to you. This may sound like a joke but it is not. I have steno pads all over the house to remind me of appointments, websites to look up, things I need to do, bills I need to pay, etc. The problem is that way to often I forget where the steno pads are. I wish you luck in remembering~Donna

don't feel bad.i forget what i'm saying in the middle of the damn sentence sometimes
brainfart at it's finest.although as long as i remember eventually,i don't worry about it.
a lot of times stress will mess with your memory too.

Hi twoey..you can rest assured that you sre not losing it...for many years over 20 I have suffered with short term memory, it's like someone says something to me and in two mins I have forgotten about it especially on the phone when am asked to get something out of the freezer the minute I have put the phone down I have forgotten it!!! Here is a funny story for you, my ex husband was on the phone to me and he asked me to take the steak out of the freezer as he fancied steak and chips etc, I said I would that evening he got sausages and mash..looking at me in horror I asked what was the matter his reply was 'where's my steak and chips?'..I blushed as soon as I'd put the phone down earlier to him I forgot it was steak he wanted!!..he never let me live that down..poor guy..there are so many other things I could tell you...but it can be wuite humorous at times others not so don't get worried about your memory LOL...hugs littleowl

My short term memory has been going for sometime now. If it is something that i really need to remember i just go ahead and write it down. I call it my Alzheimers moments because regardless it is happening and i had best just come up with ways to combat it -while i still remember that I need to!

Well, even though you lost that discussion topic, it gave you this one. My mind is shot as well. I will have the PERFECT turn of a phrase for something at work, and then by the time I get to a piece of paper or a computer, it's gone. So you have company... whether it is good compnay or not is still in question.
